How do I prune roses in September

click fraud protection

Autumn is the time when roses need to be prepared for wintering. And pruning plays an important role in this.

Thanks to the pruning I do in September, the roses are much better frost-resistant because they are easier to cover. Also in the spring, the growth of new shoots increases, the bush grows well. The number of flowers also becomes larger.

For pruning, I always choose a dry and warm day. During the cultivation of roses, I read a lot of literature on how to properly prune, depending on the type of roses.

But I realized one thing, most often such pruning is carried out in which the shoots remain about 35 cm high. At the same time, there are 5-7 buds on a branch. But, nevertheless, curly, as well as ground cover species have some differences.

There are also a number of common features. Shoots older than 3 years, that is, old ones, are removed. The same is with young twigs, with those that have a very light color, closer to white. Because such shoots are too weak, they will freeze out in winter. No need to leave the twigs that grow inside the bush.

The instrument used for the procedure, most often the pruner, must be sharp. Otherwise, you can break the bark.

If the shoot is thick, more than 1 cm thick, it is best to use a file. The cut itself should be at a 45 degree angle. It would be good to treat the cut points with a disinfectant, for example, garden varnish.

Of course, faded buds will also need to be removed. And everything that remains after pruning: twigs, pouring, must be removed away from the bush.

If you do not do this, but leave everything at the rose, most likely, insects will appear in these remnants - pests, possibly fungal diseases. Naturally, in the spring all this will go to a healthy bush.

I have some floribunda roses. I carry out combined pruning with them. This means that I cut off some of the branches quite a bit, leaving 10 buds, and the rest quite strongly - just leaving 3 buds.

So I stimulate the appearance of new branches thanks to the heavily pruned ones. Those that have undergone this procedure less will bloom faster.

For polyanthus roses, I leave 8 shoots, removing the rest. For ground cover, I cut off all the shoots on which there were flowers.

I leave side shoots with 2 or 3 buds. I shorten semi-plaited varieties, while annuals - one third.

Thus, pruning allows not only to endure the winter well, but also significantly affects the development of new shoots in spring.
