In autumn, I cut off only 2 types of "dangerous" branches on roses (you shouldn't touch the rest). I show by example
Fiery fireworks, fellow flower growers!
Do you want roses to become a real decoration of a garden in which everything is beautiful - both perfect greenery and crowned flowers? It is important to master the simple art of properly pruning the bushes, taking into account the characteristics of the beloved plant and its needs at different stages of the life cycle at different times of the year 🌹
I myself really love the "Queen of the Garden" and, of course, I grow many varieties on the site. On my channel, I recently touched upon a delicate but relevant topic - "Mistakes in preparing roses зим for winter: they kill more often than frost. I have 20 bushes and I burned myself"(go to the channel page, and the article will be in the forefront). Today - just about the autumn pruning of roses.
Pruning roses for the winter is a delicate matter
It should be borne in mind that pruning roses at any time of the year activates the growth of young shoots. This, comrades, is the worst case scenario in the autumn months, when the "Queen of the Garden" is supposed to slowly but surely go to bed.
A plant that continues to develop will not be able to winter normally. To die does not necessarily die, but the stress will survive colossal; and the next year the appearance of the bush will be life-shabby.
On a note: A similar effect is produced by nitrogen fertilization. Nitrogen should be excluded from the autumn rose menu. The rule applies not only to mineral dressings, but also organic ones. To manure and derivatives - a categorical "No!"
I'm an opponent of formative pruning in the fall. I prefer to trim my favorite bushes "to be beautiful" in spring, and I correct their shape during the whole season.
The only thing is that before the roses are sheltered (and I do not cover everything), I cut the tips of especially sweeping plants to facilitate warming for the winter.
Which branches do I cut before the winter rose
In any case, be sure to wait for the air temperature to drop to 0-10 ° C. And in such conditions, the rose slows down its life processes so much that it does not occur to it to launch the destructive mechanism of growth of young shoots.
Sick shoots - unnecessary and dangerous ballast before wintering
A must-have for a beautiful rose garden is the health of its inhabitants. A sick rose will never be beautiful. And leaving dry and infected shoots for winter sleep is a risky undertaking.
While the bush itself sleeps, bacteria and fungi continue their destructive activity during freezing temperatures. If diseased and dry branches are not removed, then decay processes from them can spread to healthy tissues. Definitely, I'm not ready to risk my charges. And you, comrades? Dangerous ballast, which in any case will have to be removed, goes under the pruner without pity.
Young is not green, but red
The situation is similar with immature young shoots on roses. They are easy to recognize: they are burgundy "dwarfs" with tiny leaves. They will not survive the winter, they will freeze and start to rot, posing a threat to the entire bush. An unenviable prospect. Therefore, I boldly cut "at the root" - right at the point of growth from the maternal adult branch.
