Hydrangeas winter well in my garden - I'll tell you how I prepare them for the cold season
Lush hydrangeas grow in my garden. Everyone who comes to visit during their flowering freezes with admiration. Of course, these beauties love grooming. In the fall, it consists in proper preparation for winter.
I think that fertilization plays an important role in this. Indeed, during the season, the flowering of hydrangeas has lost a lot of strength, which means that they need to be saturated with nutrients. This will make the plants stronger and able to withstand winter frosts more easily.
I usually apply top dressing in late September - early October. You need to have time to do this before the cold, so that the hydrangea has time to absorb the nutrients.
There are two main substances needed in the fall - potassium and phosphorus. I prepare a solution with them. In a ten-liter bucket of water I dissolve 25 g of potassium sulfate and twice 50 g of superphosphate. I water this solution, previously a day, watering the bush with plain water.
In October, I am engaged in the prevention of insect pests next spring. I spray the bush itself and the soil around it with Bordeaux liquid.
And another important part of the autumn care procedure is pruning. Pruning is slightly different in appearance. Large-leaved hydrangea is pruned in the second half of September.
And in October, even the beginning of November, paniculate and tree-like hydrangea should be cut off. I grow the last two species. Since they bloom on the shoots of the current year, you can not be afraid and boldly cut off the shoots, leaving hemp 15 cm high.
It is clear that I also remove all diseased and dry shoots. Tree hydrangea does not like density, so I cut off the growth that is directed inside the bush.
But the large-leaved shoots that have grown this season must be left, it is on them that flowers will appear.
I carry out mulching in the tree and panicle hydrangea in the fall. I put spruce twigs and needles on the trunk circle.
You can use dry leaves, peat or compost, or a combination of both, as mulch. The height of the mulch is 15 cm, and the diameter is approximately 30 - 40 cm. These species are winter-hardy, so I don't cover them with anything else.
But for those who have a large-leaved view, shelter must be made.
The twigs are bent down on the dies that were laid before the bush, it is better to tie them, dry leaves are poured on top, then the covering material and the film.
In principle, preparing hydrangeas for winter is not difficult for me. All you need to do is fertilize, cut and mulch.
I have been using this method for several years now, and my beauties winter well.
