Completed work on preparing Raspberries for winter. I tell you what I did and how
There is no gardener who does not have at least one raspberry bush. And when winter is approaching, the question arises of how to protect the plant for the winter so that next year the harvest is even better than this one.
The first thing I started with was plant feeding. In the fall, I do not use nitrogen fertilizers, otherwise all raspberries will disappear after the first frost. I prefer to use chicken manure, humus or ash, when I have it, I use it. Such fertilizers allow the roots to maintain their vitality even after severe frosts.
The next stage of preparation for winter is raspberry pruning. Pruning raspberries is needed for a reason:
1. The next year, raspberries will bear fruit better if they are pruned.
2. Thus, I get rid of fungal diseases that could attach to the plant during the growth period.
In addition, the likelihood of illness in the next year decreases, because there will be no thickets, there will be no shading, which means the sun will not let the fungus develop.
3. Unnecessary consumers of fertilizers and moisture are removed.
I immediately burn the cut branches of the plant so that neither pests nor sores have time to move to still healthy plants. Sometimes I also practice double cropping.
I do the first in the fall, and the second in the spring. In the fall, I prune more young growth by 10-15 centimeters from the top, when it has already grown to 1-1, 5 meters, and in the spring I already prune the older processes.
Due to the autumn pruning, the raspberry branch will give side branches and thus a whole bush is formed, which means more fruits.
I prune raspberries between September and October. Then the plants already cease to bear fruit, and it is still far from frost.
In addition, when pruning, I look at the shoots of plants, if they are damaged by diseases, then I immediately prune them, because next year spores and fungi can easily persist, and there will be no harvest. And be sure to cut off all the leaves if they remain.
The last thing I do to prepare raspberries for winter is cover them from frost. First, I take several stems together and tie them into a bunch, I cover this bunch well with oilcloth, and put straw under the bottom to insulate it even better. In the raspberry field, you get such as houses after my preparation.
With a little feeding, cutting and wrapping the raspberries a little, I get good yields every year and less painful plants.
And I close a lot of jam every year. The main thing is to properly care for the plant, and it will show its gratitude itself.
