The only and most effective way to prune Roses for the winter, which I use. In spring, the bushes will bloom literally before our eyes
So that roses decorate the garden with their aristocratic and fragrant flowering from early spring - I got used to taking care of them from autumn and one of the most important stages of leaving, in my opinion, is pruning, which I want to tell you about in steps and significant details.
And first of all, I want to clarify the basic rules of cropping that are performed:
• on a clear day without rain or strong wind;
· After the first frosts have come, but the subzero temperatures in the morning and evening are not stable yet;
· Using a sharp, disinfected garden tool, ideally not a simple pair of scissors, but a pruner.
It is also very important to remove faded buds from roses before the main pruning on the eve of winter - so that the plants do not waste energy on ripening the seeds.
Finally, you can start the planned pruning, which serves as a guarantee of a chic spring state of roses in the garden!
Naturally, the first step is the sanitary botanical procedures, namely, the removal of shoots clearly affected by pests or diseases, dried or broken twigs growing inside the bush.
The cut angle should always be 45 degrees. It is also necessary to cut off all the leaves.
As for the main and most important part of the "haircut" of plants, it has its own nuances, depending on the varietal groups of roses. The secret of my way of pruning roses is precisely to remember the differences!
Bush
To stimulate these roses to bloom several times over the next season, in the fall, shoots older than 3 years old are removed from them, as well as unripened shoots - because they will die anyway during the winter.
Adult and young bush roses are pruned in the same way.
Hybrid tea
Due to the fact that these roses are not particularly winter-hardy, their stems are massively shortened by half, thus preserving the stock. And if the tops of the shoots are frozen or get sick, then in the spring they can be further shortened without any problems.
Climbing
They exist in two types:
Large-flowered clumpers form most of the flower buds at the top of the shoots. When cutting them, a third of the total mass of all lashes should be removed, while maintaining no more than 10 buds on each branch.
Curly ramblers can be left virtually as they are, limited to the aforementioned sanitary pruning.
Groundcover
More than once I met the opinion that they can be grown without pruning at all. But in my opinion, with her it turns out a much neater look of the bushes and they bloom more magnificently.
All that is required is to cut off the faded lashes completely and preserve the shoots of the current year - which will be decorated with flowers in the new season.
Young shoots should be gently bent to the ground and pinned, fixing. Then, they need to be shortened by 2-3 buds.
Floribunda
Formative pruning of these roses is always done in the spring - an autumn "haircut" weakens these powerful plants so much that they stop blooming for several years.
So from the autumn activities for them - sanitary pruning and removal of immature, non-flowering shoots.
Park
As in the case of floribunda roses, autumn pruning is undesirable. So autumn pruning should only affect unripe shoots. Which, by the way, are easily recognizable by their characteristic reddish color.
Summing up, we can say that there is nothing difficult in the correct pruning of roses!
The main thing is to perform sanitary pruning first, and then, to shorten the plants, taking into account their belonging to a certain variety. This method has never let me down!
