How to make an inexpensive and durable pallet bed
My wife and I were looking for a large bed, but they did not stop at anything. Then she suddenly: "Let's do it ourselves!" And don't feed me bread, just let me melt something. So I did it... It turned out to be a bed made of pallets, and even with platforms like bedside tables. I like.
How it all began
We managed to buy pallets at a meat processing plant. We chose the best ones and everything went well until they were brought into the apartment. After a couple of hours, the smell of stale meat began to smell, but such that you won't sit with it for long. I had to urgently call for help in the form of my wife's friend, take up scrapers and scrub the pallets with detergent. In the morning it became clear that the "aroma" was not completely defeated. It was decided at least once open the tree with linseed oil.
Get to the point
On 8 pallets took 4 liters of drying oil, which was dried for three days. During this time, without haste managed to make a headboard for the bed from
planed boards 15 mm thick and open with two layers of varnish. The height of the back came out 60 cm and at first it seemed like a lot, but in the end, along with the pillows, it became obvious that it was just right.Pallets were placed with the letter "T" under mattress 160x200 cm. In this case, these are euro pallets 120x80 cm. And if 4 pieces are folded in a "T", then they form an ideal base in size. For two tiers, it took, respectively, 8 pallets, which were fastened together with self-tapping screws. Since the room is narrow, only 220 cm, the backrest had to be attached before putting the pallets in place.
I thought for a long time what to do with the sides of the pallets, but the way out was found by itself. Shortly before building a bed in the same roomlaid linoleum, from which remained solid a cut 6 m long and 33 cm wide. And since the height of the two folded pallets is about 30 cm, this strip just fit in width, did not even cut anything.
True, there was not enough linoleum for the entire perimeter, so I decided to sheathe only the side parts with it. Behind the back, it is not needed, but left the front end for a while without anything. I attached the linoleum with a stapler. The top turned out to be slightly wrapped on the horizontal part of the pallet, so that the edge of the linoleum under the mattress remained invisible.
Either tables, or bedside tables
Then boards were again needed to make the flooring on the parts of the pallets protruding to the sides. So it turned out to be decent in size side platforms-tables-bedside tables-benches, on which you can put something, put or even sit. Perhaps later, there will be lamps on them. I also opened them with varnish.
I took another board for the platforms, since I could not find a normal one for 15 mm. Bought 10 mm thick and 10 cm wide. Since the width of the projections is 40 cm, 4 pieces 80 cm long were needed for the flooring on each side.
On one upper pallet, where the distance between the boards is the greatest, I additionally tightened the slats. And when the varnish and linseed oil were completely dry and weathered, the top of the pallets was upholstered with cloth. For this I took old, but still very strong curtains and again used a stapler. By the way, the front end of the bed, which was not covered with linoleum, was also covered with fabric.
A few days later, a brand new mattress and pillows arrived. The mattress fits perfectly on the base. But this did not work out right away, since in fact the mattress came in size 160x190 cm, and I made the frame under 160x200 cm. Well, what I ordered, it came... This meant that the bed would have to be disassembled and cut 10 cm from 4 pallets. It took half a day.
If you compare the distance from the wall to photo 2 and 5, the difference in length is clearly visible. But this is not a bad thing that it happened in the end, since the passage is now more convenient, and the mattress length of 190 cm is quite enough.
Both myself and my wife are satisfied with the result. As it seems, the design is very reliable and durable. The only pity is that the space under the bed cannot be used to the fullest extent as we would like. But if you raise the linoleum on the sides, then all the same, I can store some long and low things in the inside of the pallets, which is also not bad.
