How to competently dig a garden in the fall: advice from an agronomist.
A large share of your harvest depends on whether you dig up a garden for the winter correctly. Several years ago, a friend of mine, who has long been an agronomist in a fairly successful farm, shared with me some useful advice on this topic.
Most gardeners dig or plow their gardens in the fall, especially if the soil is loamy. I am also no exception to the rule, and I am always careful about digging my beds for the winter.
But only the beds in boxes do not need to be dug up and even loosened, but on their surface I bring crushed tops and residues of vegetable crops to a height of at least 10 cm, which, having rotted over the winter, will make the soil loose and fertilize her.
Thus, in the spring you will only have to slightly loosen the ground and you can plant plants. On such soil, the harvest will be very rich.
The rest of the beds need plowing or digging for a number of reasons:
- if there are not a large number of worms in the garden, so that they process all the soil, it is necessary to dig up the ground with humus or manure;
- having dug up the garden, you will destroy most of the weed root system;
- when processing the earth, the larvae of pests are extracted to the surface, which will die from hypothermia in the frosty winter;
How to dig up the soil correctly?
In no case do not break an earthen lump, but leave it lying in a large block. This is done in order to increase the area of land on which harmful larvae will be located, which will freeze in winter, and in the spring the soil will warm up faster, which will help to get an earlier harvest.
During spring digging, clods of earth are crushed and then leveled with a rake.
If you follow these tips, you will have fewer weeds and pests and increase your yield. Try this simple method of digging a garden this year and the result will pleasantly surprise you.
