How I was an urban dare to acquire a household

The funny thing in this story is that I am an absolutely urban person and I saw chicken coops in my village only from the outside and from afar. Of course, I heard about the existence of chickens and ducks, but somehow I did not think that I would deal with them.

But one way or another, having read articles about poultry breeding for 2 months, having visited Ryabushka, I decided to build a chicken coop. Even when I heard from Lyoshka (spouse) that everything would die out in 3 days, I did not stop. The chicken coop was built, put into operation and 10 chickens became the first inhabitants there. An ordinary chicken coop without any "bells and whistles".

I fed the chickens as advised on the forums: wet mash, grain, mixed feed, bread, boiled fish, meat waste from the table. She constantly poured ash, shells, river sand, gave chalk. The entire livestock is intact - not a single chick has been lost.

Ducks

I bought ducklings in mid-May, when I already lived in a country house with laying hens. Torn away from the farm portal and in a complete information vacuum, she began to leave on a whim. She did as she knew!

She fed her with corn, mixed feed, bran, boiled potatoes. I bought supplements: vitamin flour. The ducklings also all survived. There were problems with one torticollis, but I'll talk about this further.

I bought the ducks because I could not find the required number of layers. So I added a new batch: chickens - 7 pcs. and ducklings — 10 pcs. Fortunately, I was able to fence off the place in the chicken coop - the area allowed.

When I bought, the ducklings were very dirty, and then they quickly washed themselves in a basin. I changed the water for this four times. Then it turned out that they were very clean. I fed them 3 times a day and changed the water 3-5 times a day. As it got warmer, she began to drive out of the chicken coop and walk. But there is a lot of dirt in the yard after them.

Time flew by quickly: slaughter

“I’m going to cut a rooster Olga this week,” Alexei once said. By this time, the ducks were slaughtered and lay in the freezer for a long time. Cut 5 pcs. on the 47th day (they cut me down and showed me how to clean); 2 pcs. on the 62nd day; 3 last for 67 days. The last 5 she cut herself.

You get used to living things - it's a pity ...

The ducklings conquered me with their smart eyes with white eyelashes and plushness. While there are no feathers, they are all covered with thick down, which covers the body very densely. It's a pity, but this is their fate. It makes no sense to keep it longer: first, there will be 2 months of molting and there will be a sea of feathers around, and then by the fall it will only add fat. We don't need fat.

Crooked neck

The one with the crooked neck was the last to chop. It was the hardest thing with him. He sneezed once, I took him into the house and gave him a rotocan, fed him with activated charcoal (he walked fluidly and was afraid of infection). It turned out to be difficult for him to clean his nose. And I washed it and cleaned everything. I just didn't drip naphthyzine.

Fat worked up everything, but not much of it. The weight was about 2 kg and a little more: these are already peeled, gutted. Their liver and heart are twice as large as chicken. According to childhood memories, the chicken heart in the soup was always harsh, and these just melted in my mouth.

Conclusion: to have livestock for the season is very useful, profitable, and most importantly - delicious! Even I was able to do this, although I thought it would not work.
