Safe cutting discs for wood grinders (angle grinder)

Angle grinder, or simply a grinder, is one of the most common cutting power tools. It is mainly used for cutting metal (with a metal disc) and for cutting concrete (with a diamond sand disc).

The grinder is also used for grinding wood, stone (also with the appropriate attachments - petal or "turtle").

But for sawing wood, the grinder is considered a dangerous tool. Conventional discs for metal and concrete are not suitable (wood is charred). And a saw blade like a circular saw is dangerous. Wood is a material in which the disc can be pinched and serious injuries can be caused if the grinder is pulled out of the hands.

Such a disc, even with carbide taps, is not highly recommended for use on angle grinders. There are many teeth on the blade and each one contributes to the cutting force. There is a risk of pinching the disc.

But cutting disc technology does not stand still. There are quite safe discs for wood for angle grinders. The first option is a three-tooth carbide-tipped wood blade:

The disc has only three teeth and they are thicker than the disc itself. For this reason, the resistance to rotation of the blade when cutting wood is minimal and it is practically impossible to clamp it even in hard wood species. Another safety is provided by the geometry of the disc: after the tooth, part of the disc is cut off. This is also done to reduce the resistance of the blade when cutting. Manufacturers write about the use of such a disk up to 12,200 rpm. Basically, these are discs with a diameter of 125 mm.

In addition to wood, such a disc can be used to cut plywood, chipboard, plastic and even aerated concrete. According to reviews, the disc saws these materials like clockwork.

The next disc for wood for a grinder is a carbide grain cutting disc:

Discs are far from new, but not everyone knows about them. Disk cost:

Carbide-tipped wood cutting discs are slightly more expensive than three-flute discs (assuming same brand disc selection).

But even if you work with such discs, never violate safety precautions: the disc on the grinder should rotate so that sparks (or sawdust) fly towards you. In this case, if the disc breaks, its parts will fly away from you or under your feet (the rest of the directions are protected by a protective casing). And the grinder will pull out from you when clamping the disk. And there should be no hanging elements on the clothes.

And one more disk on wood on a angle grinder - a disk with a chain like a benzo or an electric saw:

It consists of two discs with a chain clamped between them (riveted into a ring). 125 mm disc has 14 teeth. They provide sufficient resistance to rotation. According to reviews, if a knot is encountered on the way of cutting, then a blow is felt and the grinder pulls out. Therefore, I would not use this particular blade for sawing wood.

Basically, such a disc is used by craftsmen to give smooth shapes in their products: for sculptures, bowls, wooden sinks. This disc is used to sample the breed. Disk cost:

But in order to protect yourself even more when cutting with such discs on angle grinders, you need to use such attachments that will turn the grinder into a kind of circular saw:
