How Not to Cover Flowers for the Winter: 5 Most Dangerous Mistakes
Do you also make these mistakes in preparing your plants for winter? If you avoid them, then your garden will delight you with its abundant flowering.
All of the following errors lead to plant death. Now I will write to you about the mistakes that most people make.
1. Covering flowers too soon
When cold weather sets in, we can often observe temperature fluctuations. Warming often follows after them. Therefore, I advise you not to cover the flowers too early, but to wait for stable sub-zero temperatures.
Covering early will damage your garden culture. If you still made this mistake, then I advise you to take urgent emergency measures - fence the flowers with a structure, it is advisable to put bottles or glasses of hot water there.
I advise you to cover your plants at the end of October. Then the weather becomes stable, and at night the temperature is below zero almost all the time. But it's better to look at the weather. It depends on the region you live in.
2. Shelter with polyethylene
If you cover the flowers with plastic, the flowers may soon weaken and die. Polyethylene does not allow warm air to pass through well, as a result, your plants will freeze.
I recommend that you use polyethylene in case of short-term shelter of flowers, for example, from rains. It can serve only in the case of an additional heat source, but not the main one.
3. Shelter a flower with infected material
You should look carefully to see if the material shows signs of contamination or infection? If you cover with such material, then it can become a source of diseases for your flowers.
To keep your flowers in good condition, you need to cover them with quality material without damage.
4. Lack of frame base
I suggest you use agrofibre to cover flowers. This is a fairly dense material that protects flowers from frost well.
It will serve you in use for more than one year. Better to make an air gap between the bush and the material. This is the best way to protect your flowers even in extreme cold.
Additionally, you need to use frame structures. They prevent cold air from damaging the flower.
5. Hilling with peat
Fresh peat is a toxic material, substances of which lead to weakening of the flower and poisoning of the soil.
But if you have nothing else, then I advise you to spread it out in a thin layer, air it several times, stirring thoroughly.
If you avoid these mistakes, then I guarantee that in spring you will have healthy plants that will delight with their beauty and rapid growth.
