Wood cutters for a grinder (angle grinder), about which not everyone knows
The article Safe cutting discs for wood grinders (angle grinder) it was about saw blades for sawing wood with this power tool. Which, in the opinion of most, is not intended for working with wood (maybe other than sanding). Not everyone agreed that these blades were safe to use. But according to this logic, any power tool is dangerous.
To reduce the speed of the angle grinder (in models without a built-in speed controller), you can use a dimmer. An article about it: The speed controller for the grinder (angle grinder) from the dimmer. Costs 300 rubles
Studying this topic of discs for angle grinders, I was surprised at their variety. Not everything can be found in a specialized power tool store. Although, there is a lot in online stores.
The discs in question are intended for craftsmen with a design bias, for wood carvers and sculptors, furniture makers working with valuable wood species. In principle, anyone can purchase such a disc and try to make, for example, a sink made of wood in a washing bath or a bowl for fruit in the country.
Let's start our overview with the so-called debarker for working with wood:
Or, in another way, this cutter is called a cup cutter. It is mainly used by builders who build houses and baths from round timber. Used in conjunction with a chainsaw attachment. The disc is designed to create a semicircular notch in the tree. A moment in the process of work - on the third slide.
But the same cutter can be used on a grinder (angle grinder). In order to choose the material for making bowls, sinks or other wood products. Debarker cost example:
Following discs: brand milling cutters Arbortech - TurboPlane, Mini Turbo and Industrial (Mini Pro):
Tungsten carbide tipped cutters. On some models of these discs, the cutting parts are replaceable. In principle, they are similar to debarkers. TurboPlane milling disc - works in a plane, and the cutting part is soldered on it. TurboPlane is also called the disc planer. Disc diameter 100 mm. Disc steel thickness 2.6mm
Disk Usage Example:
The breed in this product can be selected in a couple of tens of minutes. The rough version of the bowl is made quickly enough. But the cost of discs of this design and brand is quite high, discs are available mainly to professionals. All due to the fact that this is a German instrument. And you know the Euro rate. Prices:
A disc with a smaller diameter is used to make shallow vases from wood. Not for mass sales, of course. Such items have an artistic meaning and are made to order. What is not an expansion of the range for craftsmen who work with wood and have their own workshop and a regular circle of clients. I think in this topic everything is limited only by fantasy. And there is a tool for any task.
You can evaluate the work of the disk in the video (in English):
And in fact - a disc-plane. Video of 2012, and Chinese manufacturers have not yet filled the market with inexpensive discs of this format. Low demand? Although an inexpensive analogue found here:
Also, an analogue of Arbortech cutters will be such a cutter for wood - also from Chinese manufacturers:
There are two cutter shapes available: a flat washer with three teeth or a bowl with rounded edges. There is the same cutter with six teeth - look at joom.com or aliexpress.com
I would also like to highlight the milling attachment for the Arbortech Ball Gouge grinder:
The spherical shape of the cutter allows craftsmen to make sculptures out of wood and everyone who wants them - spoons, small vases and jugs made of wood (choose a narrow neck). In principle, it resembles a ball cutter. But it is for the router. And the Arbortech Ball Gouge is for angle grinders.
Another type of discs for angle grinders is a grinding disc with a large abrasive for wood
This is a stamped steel disc with the same tungsten carbide brazed in the form of debris or large particles. It is somewhat reminiscent of coarse sandpaper. But these discs are not cheap either. Not Arbortech, of course - comparable to the price of a stone disc:
Perhaps the most affordable disc for working with wood (sampling and even sawing) is the chain disc. With a chain like a chainsaw. I showed it in the last article (via the link at the top). But I will focus on it as a tool not for sawing, but for sampling rocks when making the same bowls or creating some kind of grooves, depressions:
Prices for it are also reasonable:
Their diameters 115 and 125 mm - for small angle grinders. Large grinders for sawing, it is inconvenient to work with them in this format, so such discs with a diameter of 180 mm or more are not produced.
An analogue of a chain disk can be such a wood cutter on a angle grinder:
But the price is twice as high because of the carbide taps.
Safety precautions must be observed when working with these discs. Even though it's a tree. Safety glasses or a mask, no hanging clothes, control of any movement with the tool. Of course, biting is less likely here, as when cutting wood, but this does not mean that the tool will be completely safe.
Who used such discs - write your review in the comments.
