For the first time, scientists managed to control the trajectories of lightning
An international team of scientists for the first time conducted a successful experiment to change the trajectory of lightning movement using a special laser technology. It is about this experiment that I want to tell you today.
Where will lightning strike?
To date, it is almost impossible to predict where the lightning will strike, and the only more or less a reliable method of protection is the installation of a rather cumbersome and expensive protection system lightning rods.
But now an international group of scientists has implemented a rather ambitious project and experimentally demonstrated how it is possible to influence the generated charges at a distance and thus control their movement.
To do this, the engineers used a special low-intensity laser beam. In this case, the laser beam by its work heats the graphene microparticles (sputtered in the chamber) and thereby induces an electrical breakdown.
It is for this reason that the electric discharge flows only along the trajectory of the laser beam, and nothing else.
It should be noted that previous experiments with a laser setup were unsuccessful despite the fact that the laser power was 1000 times higher. In a new experiment, it was decided to lower the power, and sprayed graphene was added.
It was thanks to graphene that lightning began to spread along the beam. And now scientists are racking their brains how to implement the experiment outside the walls of the laboratory.
And so far they cannot figure out how to spray enough graphene in the atmosphere for the laser to be able to influence the trajectory of a lightning discharge.
Where can it come in handy
Of course, any discovery should be of practical use and, as the scientists themselves argue, their work can be useful in industry and even medicine, for example, for upgrading optical scalpels.
Well, let's see where the experiments of scientists will lead (or will not lead to anything at all). Well, if you liked the material, then do not forget the thumbs up and comment. Thank you for your time! Take care of yourself!
