The newly minted villagers believe that the subsidiary farm will not only provide the family with environmentally friendly products, but also bring a good income. Let's look at this situation using the example of raising chickens for the production of edible eggs.

Question

FORUMHOUSE member greenyojik asks:
“Can you please tell me if it makes sense to keep and breed chickens for a family of two or is it cheaper and easier to buy eggs and poultry meat in a store? Maybe someone has a list of costs and other data to help them decide whether to start or not? Interested in: the cost of building a chicken coop, food, vitamins, care, medicines. "

The question is correct, because in numerous naive videos “poultry farmers” consider only the cost of feed (mainly in the summer months) and egg production at its peak when the hen is in ideal conditions. In fact, all this does not look so rosy. Both winter and molt are present in the breeding cycle of poultry, when chickens do not lay at all. And also do not forget about the energy consumption for heating and lighting the chicken coop, about diseases and mortality of poultry.

What do members of the forum think

The user of our portal Alexey Gray believes:
“Sorry, of course, but you are asking nonsense. The cost of home eggs consists of many components, and it is different for everyone. And the chicken coop, and the feed, and the price of the chicken is different. The cost of your eggs will be approximately equal to the price of store eggs, but these are homemade eggs! If you compare, then you need to compare your price with the price of home.
On the other hand, what kind of savings are you dreaming of? Your family of two eats an average of 2 eggs per day, which means that you will eat 60 eggs per month. Even if your eggs are cheaper than store eggs, how much will you save? 50 rubles? A great help to the family budget! But chickens need care, albeit a little, but they need to be dealt with! "
Forum member with the nickname Lesnaya:
“It won't be cheaper. But you will definitely know what you eat and that there are no antibiotics and other chemicals in meat and eggs. We brought chickens this year. I sell the surplus eggs. Enough for food. The cost of chickens has not returned yet. "

As we can see, the opinions are roughly similar, but they are without specific numbers. Let's count and determine: is it profitable to keep chickens for ourselves or not?

Expenses

We will count the cycle of 11 months. This is the period when the chicken began to lay, but has not yet molted. It makes no sense to keep chickens longer than this period, especially breeds for egg production. After a year and a half, the egg production of chickens decreases and their maintenance becomes unprofitable.

And also we will take the floor keeping of layers as the basis for the calculation - this is the most acceptable option for a household, a summer residence. In this case, fewer heads will sit per unit area, but you will not have to spend money on cages and additional equipment (ventilation, dropping system).

Pullets

Of course, you can grow them yourself, but it's more profitable to buy them. You need to take five-month-old chickens. The average cost of factory culling is 350 rubles per head. This amount is included in the cost price. When choosing pullets for counting, we will not take into account mortality, since this practically does not happen with proper bird care.

Feed

This position can be viewed from two sides. The first is that you can make compound feed yourself. Its quality will be higher, but it will also come out more expensive. The price is influenced by the purchase of grain, protein supplements, vitamins and minerals. Do not forget about the special equipment for its preparation.

The second and more acceptable option is to buy good-quality compound feed. Its average wholesale price is 25 rubles per kilogram. We do not include shipping costs!

We will feed the chickens for 11 months at a rate of 150 grams per day. It turns out that one chicken in 330 days will receive 49.5 kilograms of compound feed, which in monetary terms will be 1238 rubles.

To this amount we add 350 rubles for the purchase of pullets and we get 1587 rubles.

Heating with electricity and lighting

Chickens tolerate the cold quite well, but for the production of eggs it is necessary to create conditions close to ideal. This means that the hen house should be warm and dry, as well as light 14 hours a day. To maintain the declared egg production, the hen must not suffer.

If we take only the winter months for calculation and take into account that the chicken coop for 120 heads (36 sq. m) will be heated by a two-kilowatt convector around the clock, this one will take 4320 kilowatts. Let's take the average tariff of 4 rubles 50 kopecks, in the money will come out 19,440 rubles. We divide this amount by 120 heads and we get 162 rubles.

Next, add 1587 + 162 = 1749 rubles. But that's not all. You need to heat the chicken coop in March and November. Here the regime is not round-the-clock, but let's count 60 days for 12 hours. We get 1440 kilowatts, which we multiply by the tariff and divide by the livestock. 1440*4.5=6480. Divide the amount of 6480 by 120 chickens and get 54 rubles. About 20 rubles per head are spent on lighting. Next, we add the received amounts to the cost price. 1749 + 54 + 20 = 1823 rubles.

Litter

In order not to remove the droppings every day and to facilitate your work, a deep bedding (sawdust) is placed in the chicken coop. This layer not only works as a "diaper", but also helps keep the room warm. Service life of deep bedding - a year; the cost of 12 cubic meters of sawdust is 3000 rubles. 3000/120 = 25 (based on 120 heads). We add the sum of 25 rubles to the cost price of 1823 and get 1848 rubles.

But in the litter, you also need to add bacteria, the cost of which is approximately 1,800 rubles, which will add another 15 rubles to the cost per head. Total 1848 + 15 = 1863 rubles.

Medicines and vitamins

Vitamin prophylaxis should be done regularly for poultry. This will avoid death. A complex of vitamins and minerals (including vitamin D, which is extremely necessary in winter) and a stimulant antiseptic will cost 2,000 rubles per cycle. In terms of one head, 17 rubles will come out (at the rate of 120 heads per cycle). 17 + 1863 = 1880 rubles.

Chicken coop

The issue is controversial, but if you build a 36 sq. m, it will cost about 150 thousand rubles. 120 heads are comfortably accommodated on such an area. The chicken coop should last 10 years and it makes sense to just calculate its depreciation. We immediately display the result - 125 rubles per head.

As a result, we get 2005 rubles. This is the cost of buying and maintaining one chicken for one cycle of 11 months.

Profit

Now for the pleasant. Egg breeds should carry approximately 300 eggs per year. But to be realistic, you need to reduce the declared productivity to 250 eggs per egg production period.

The average price of a homemade egg is 8 rubles per piece. We multiply 250 * 8 = 2000 rubles. This is the proceeds from the sale of eggs. But chicken is not only eggs, but also meat. If we take the average carcass weight of 1.3 kg and multiply by the price of homemade chicken 230 rubles, we get 299 rubles. 2000 + 299 = 2299 rubles.

In the end, we received a profit from eggs and meat in 2299 rubles and the cost of maintaining one head - 2005 rubles. Subtract one from the other and we get the ROI. 2299-2005=294 rubles.

If you have 100 chickens, then in 11 months you will receive an income of 29,400 rubles from them. We divide the profit by 12 months and we get an average monthly profit of 2,450 rubles. The salary is so-so...

Conclusion

This is an average but real calculation. If you live in a rural area and earn at least something from this business, you need to keep at least 800 chickens. With this amount, you can have a salary popular by Russian standards of 20 thousand rubles a month. Well, good meat and an egg to the table as a bonus!
