What varieties of tomatoes to plant in a greenhouse for an early harvest
This is not a contrived name, but a question from our subscriber, Ivan Ivanov (Chernozem region). And he worries many. Because the word: early ripe is on every second package of tomato seeds. Only in practice:
- or the tomatoes are in no hurry to ripen
- or completely tasteless
- or barren
- and worst of all, if they get sick
The most delicious solution seems to be someone's proven solution. But there are also several nuances here.
- The region is important. What is good in the south, bad in the suburbs, etc. I also live in the Black Earth Region, like Ivan, I hope I will be able to offer a ready-made solution (at the end of the article).
- Greenhouses are different, low and high, “hole-in” or rather sealed, heated and not.
- Both May and June harvests are called early. The beginning of July is also good. The earlier the harvest, the more it depends on agricultural technology and weather.
- If every year in the greenhouse tomatoes suffer from one disease, for example, cladosporium or late blight, it is not necessary to plant varieties that are unstable to this disease. I discard top rot lovers, although this is not a disease, but a problem.
In order for the early tomato not to slow down with ripening, it must be well fed. Well-rotted compost, more heat and light for it, enough moisture and to minimize stress.
Turnkey solution for short tomatoes
I will have two standard varieties for the earliest harvest this year. Moskvich and Yamal, only 4 roots, that's enough for us. The height of these plants is up to 40 cm. I will transplant the seedlings into buckets and these tomatoes will grow in a greenhouse under an IR heater until good weather. Then I will evict them.
For just an early harvest, I will plant one tomato bush in the greenhouse Labrador (seeds are sold) and June Forum (don't look for sale, they gave it to me). These are low bushes, up to 70 cm tall.
I will plant the rest of the early determinant varieties of tomatoesin the open field. These are bushes up to 80 cm tall: Bush tsifomandra and Cosmonaut Volkov. And indoor standard cherry Florida Petite. Both Tsifomandra and Cosmonaut Volkova are tall, I have short ones.
Ivan, Cosmonaut Volkov can be safely put in a greenhouse, he will be higher there. The variety is old, tested by many. There are negative reviews, but I think this is a re-grading, Cosmonaut Volkov should be a decent grade.
Ready-made solution for tomatoes of unlimited growth
I will plant early ones in the greenhouse:
- Mortgage lefte-bi (collectible)
- Kiwi
- Cerricollo (I have a grade)
- Cherry yellow
These are exactly the varieties. I used to plant hybrids for an early harvest.
There are almost as many such solutions as there are gardeners. Hope there will be many more varieties in the comments.
What varieties would you recommend to Ivan to get an early harvest of tomatoes in a greenhouse?
I would be grateful for your subscription and communication :)
