Pliers or pliers - what is the difference: we understand the issue from history to GOSTs
For the sake of curiosity, I decided to figure out how pliers and pliers really differ. There is too much controversy over the differences between these two tools. Or is it still one device? Let's talk in a nutshell about what they are arguing about, touch on the origin of the two names, and in order to finally dot the issue, let's look at GOSTs. I believe that you need to trust the standards.
Why there were controversies at all
There were two words in the lexicon of a Russian person: pliers and pliers. Moreover, these words are called a very similar instrument to each other. Oftentimes, the same device is called differently. But the most interesting thing is that everyone understands each other perfectly.
Progress does not stand still and various options began to appear in the tool:
- side cutters;
- toothed groove;
- curved jaws;
- guillotine cutters, etc.
And there was controversy over the differences between pliers and pliers. The disputants most often do not know the true difference, so they attribute options to the tool at their discretion.
Origin of instrument names
Pliers - Russian word - tool with flat jaws. It is used to hold sheet or roll materials.
Combination pliers is a French word (pince-à-tige, pince - clamp, tige - rod) - a tool that can be used to clamp round rods.
I think this is exactly what you need to build on when choosing a particular name. By the way, one and the other device may have different options.
If you add side cutters to your pliers, they don't become pliers.
If you make pliers with long jaws, they will not become pliers, etc.
The difference between pliers and pliers according to GOST
You can argue for a long time. I am sure there will be people who will dispute the above opinion. The most that I can do is to provide links to regulatory documents. By the way, there are no clear definitions. But there are visual sketches and even sizes.
Pliers GOST 7236-93
In the original version, there are no side cutters on the jaws or "guillotines" at the base of the handles.
Pliers GOST 17438-72
This design allows you to hold rounded elements: fittings, studs, nuts, etc.
Combined pliers GOST R 53925-2010
The last photo shows, perhaps, the most familiar form factor of the product. And if in GOST you are confused by the name "pliers", I will process the note from this document:
This standard is modified from the international standard ISO 5746: 2004 * "Pliers and wire cutters. UNIVERSAL LINEMAN PASSATITIES AND PASSATITIES. Dimensions and test values "
Therefore, how to properly name the instrument - "Universal pliers" or "combination pliers" let everyone decide for himself. This is not a phone with a vibrator, where the purpose depends on what is built into what.
It is unlikely that after reading the article, someone will call the tool differently, but it was interesting to understand everything.
