How to cut plywood with a jigsaw and not leave chips: 7 proven ways
Professional jigsaws are equipped with special anti-splinter inserts. If you do not have one, then when working with plywood, chips will certainly appear. How to avoid this - read on.
Masking tape
The first method is based on the use of paper masking tape. It must be glued to the cut and cut along it. Convenience in precise marking: it can be applied directly to the tape with a marker or pencil.
Water
If you don't have the above tape at hand, wet the plywood at the cut. The fibers softened from moisture will cut, not crumble. Use a sponge for this procedure - pouring water onto the material is not recommended.
Metal saw
If you do not want to wet the plywood, install a metal file with a pitch of 0.7 mm (marking T118G) in the tool. The teeth of such a blade are small and, therefore, there is nothing to leave chips on the plywood. Naturally, working with this canvas will take a little more time, but the result is worth it.
When using this method, work intermittently and observe fire-prevention measures: friction will heat the file for metal above the prescribed temperature.
Homemade liner
For a large amount of work, a special insert can be made. It is best to make it from plexiglass. It is made very simply: a plexiglass platform with a slot for a file is attached to the sole of the jigsaw. Double-sided tape is suitable for mounting the platform.
Laminate canvas
This is one of the highest quality ways to cut plywood. For example, laminate blades marked T101AO are also designed to work on hardwood. The teeth of this saw are designed so that they do not split the fibers and leave a clean cut.
Knife
First, forcefully cut through the top fibers of the plywood with a knife. To do this, you need a ruler, which will act as guides to indicate the cut. To make the line from the blade better visible, mark it with a marker.
Hot glue
This is one of the most exotic techniques that you will hardly ever need. But since we describe all the effective ways of cutting plywood without chips, we will also mention it. Everything is simple here: apply hot melt glue to the cutting line and walk along it with a jigsaw. Remove residual glue after cutting.
Rating
Of all the above methods, four turned out to be the most effective. In the first place is the splinter-resistant plexiglass liner. The second and third places are taken by canvases on laminate and metal. The fourth was taken by masking tape.
