Finnish and Swedish paint for wood with your own hands: recipes from the Soviet magazine "Do it yourself"

Once upon a time, my father and I decided to make a wooden fence in the country. After the construction of the fence, they began to think about how to paint the tree. My father remembered seeing an interesting composition of homemade Finnish paint in the magazine. Time passed, but the fence is still standing. The tree has become strong as stone, the nails cannot even be pulled out.

I want to tell you how to make your own paint that will protect the tree from decay, bad weather, and pests. It was written in the magazine that Swedish and Finnish paint gives the wood a chance to breathe, does not clog pores as much as oil paint. Moreover, it is cheaper than buying ready-made paint. Durability is another plus.

The formulations below are practically the same. There are differences in individual components.

Swedish recipe and its ingredients:

  • Flour - 590 gr.,
  • Salt - 260 gr.,
  • Iron vitriol - 260 gr.,
  • Red lead iron - 260 g.,
  • Pure water - 4.6 liters,
  • Drying oil - 240 gr.,
  • Pigments are optional.

Pour flour with 3 liters of clean and cold water. Stir and put on low heat. A paste is formed. After that, you need to put salt (without removing it from the heat). Pour vitriol in the same way and stir. Cook until dissolved. Then pour red lead into the mass and stir everything until smooth. Pour in drying oil, stirring then pour the rest of the water. In the process, you do not need to remove the pot with paint from the fire.

Paint with warm paint. If you leave, cool, then the mass will become thick and not suitable for staining. Both wood and plaster can be coated.

Finnish paint and its components:

  • Rye flour - 730 gr.,
  • Iron vitriol - 1570 g.,
  • Water - 9 liters, salt - 370 g.,
  • Lime pigment - 1570 gr.
Rye flour used to be cheaper. Now you can use wheat with the same success. You need flour to get a paste.

Now you need to properly prepare the composition. Pour flour into water (6 l. cold liquid) and stir to make "milk". Then put the pan on the fire. The main thing here is to stir periodically. Then add salt and vitriol. Stir the composition and pour in the lime pigment. Mix again. Boil the rest of the water (3 liters), and pour into the mass in a stream, stirring occasionally.

Paint with a roller or a regular brush while still warm. If the paint cools, it becomes thick. Reheat - will lose strength.
