Why do you need a window in a gas boiler room: requirements for the installation of equipment

General requirements for the boiler room

It is forbidden to place the boiler room in residential premises and premises with high humidity. That is, it is impossible to organize a furnace in the toilet, bathroom, living room, study, bedroom.

It is allowed to place gas heating equipment in the kitchen, hallway, corridor, utility room. But the best option for arranging a boiler room will be a separate specialized room.

Ceiling height and room volume

The height of the furnace room ceilings must be at least 2.5 meters. But if the boiler capacity is less than 60 kilowatts, then the permissible ceiling height can be 2 meters.

Another requirement is imposed on the volume of the premises. One gas boiler with a capacity of up to 30 kW must have at least 7.5 cubic meters of room; equipment with a capacity of 30–60 kW requires 13.5 m3; boilers with a capacity of 60-200 kW are installed in furnaces with a volume of at least 15 m3.

In other words: if the ceiling height in the boiler room is 2.5 meters, then the area for installing equipment with a capacity of over 60 kW should be at least 6 square meters. That is, 2 * 3 meters and with a ceiling height of 2.5 meters.

Ventilation

The furnace must be equipped with ventilation! The ventilation duct should go directly to the street and not communicate with other rooms. And it is also necessary to organize the flow of air into the boiler room: install a supply valve in the wall or put a louver on the front door.

The air flow into the combustion rooms must be three times. This means that the air masses in the room must be changed three times in one hour. For example, in a boiler room with a volume of 15 m3, the air exchange should be 45 cubic meters per hour.

If the air flow is insufficient, it will cause poor combustion of the gas. In this case, the residual products of combustion will begin to accumulate in the room. This will not only increase the explosion hazard, but also contribute to the accumulation of hazardous substances in the boiler room, for example, mercaptan. This substance deodorizes the gas and is extremely dangerous in large dosages.

Why is there a window in the boiler room

A prerequisite for installing a gas boiler is the presence of a window. SP 42-101-2003 states that the area of ​​a separate glass must be at least 0.8 m2 with a glass thickness of 3 mm; 1.0 m2 - with a glass thickness of 4 mm and 1.5 m2 - with a glass thickness of 5 mm. And this is just the glazing area - the area of ​​the frame is not taken into account here!

The window in the boiler room is installed not at all for lighting, but as an easily resettable structure. This ensures the integrity of the house in the event of a gas explosion. That is, the blast wave will escape through the window and thus will not destroy the structure of the building.

But this condition is not necessary for gas-heating equipment with a sealed combustion chamber. When using such devices, the window in the boiler room may not be installed.
