An evergreen ivy hedge that is frost-resistant and stays green down to -25 degrees
IN this article one reader said in a commentary that she breeds wild ivy (Hedera Helix - ivy ordinary) to create a hedge that does not shed foliage and keeps it green even in very coldy. It became interesting, I decided to see what kind of plant it is and whether this ivy can really be used as a living evergreen hedge.
Common ivy is distributed throughout Europe, the Black Sea coast, the Caucasus. In Siberia, due to frost, it does not grow. Some varieties are used as indoor plants.
Ivy really retains its foliage and color even at fairly low negative temperatures. Of course, -30 gr. does not stand, the leaves turn gray and the plant sheds them. And some varieties freeze to ground level. Therefore, it can be grown mainly in the southern regions, where there are short-term frosts up to a maximum of - 20... - 25 gr.
A hedge is not difficult to make. If you have a chain-link fence, then shoots of this plant are planted around the perimeter of the fence with an interval of 30-50 cm:
In the first year, ivy will grow slowly because he first develops his root system. But next season it will add in growth along the grid and in 2-3 seasons will completely close the fence. Ivy is very easy to propagate by shoots, it easily gives roots if you sprinkle a piece of shoot with earth and water.
He does not need to prune the branches, you can only correct them, which have decided to develop to the side (peduncle shoots). Ivy can be ordered online:
Ivy cost - from 300 rubles / escape. From April they begin to deport.
There are those who want to experiment with different varieties of ivy (video below). But it is better to immediately acquire those varieties that grow at the maximum latitudes of the ivy distribution area: Poland, Belarus, Estonia.
Ivy is a honey plant. It does not begin to bloom immediately, but on average when it reaches the age of 10 years. Blooms in September-October. And the berries ripen in winter and serve as food for birds. They are poisonous to humans.
Ivy does not like the southern and southeastern sides. Its leaves burn in the bright sun. Withstands up to 3-4 hours of bright sun per day. Therefore, it is suitable for areas of the fence, on which the shadow from the house falls. Some plant ivy along the north and northwest walls of the house:
In England there are many examples when ivy covers all the walls of a building. This kind of amateur. For me - a little gloomy. But you can decorate part of the wall of the dacha with evergreen shoots. In our climate, summer residents do it with hops. But it is not evergreen.
Ivy, due to the mini-roots on the trunks, is well fixed on any surface. It is not specifically fixed, it can only be guided. But the surface does not destroy, on the contrary, it covers with leaves from rain.
You can approach the fence as a designer, for example, in the process of growing shoots, fix them in this form:
It turns out there are examples of successful ivy growing. An example from the Leningrad region:
The most frost-resistant varieties are from Brest. The foliage on them could withstand temperatures up to - 30 grams. and stayed green. Other varieties of foliage were dropped, but in the spring it grew back.
If someone has experience in creating ivy green hedges, share your experience in the comments.
