Picking tomato seedlings: benefit or harm
It's time to plant seedlings of peppers and tomatoes. Many novice gardeners are interested in the issue of picking tomatoes. Is it needed or not needed, benefit or harm from it?
There are many opinions on this matter. Let's look at this issue.
Autumn harvesting of green mass
If, when removing tomato bushes from the garden after harvesting fruits, you put a lot of effort into pull the plant from the ground, then the root system developed well in the culture, which means it pleased its yield. Most likely, during the seedling period, you dived young plants.
Something from agrotechnical knowledge
The root system of all varieties of tomatoes is of the rod type. After pinching the root, lateral roots of the fibrous type develop, in which the absorbent surface and mass are greater than that of the core.
In addition, the lateral roots quickly recover and enhance branching when damaged. The main root (tap) is not restored. When picking and further transplanting to a permanent place, lateral and adventitious roots grow rapidly, which branch out up to 1.5-2 meters to the side, up to 60 cm deep into the ground.
This explains most often the cracking of tomatoes in rainy weather in the greenhouse. For good development of the root system, loose and fertile soil is required, as well as a soil temperature not lower than + 20- + 25 degrees.
If the soil temperature drops below +15 degrees, the roots stop absorbing nutrients from the ground, sometimes they can rot.
Whether or not a pick is needed
In summer, the earth does not warm up more than 40-50 cm. In cold soil, roots will not grow deep into the soil.
In order for the lateral roots to develop to the sides, loose, fertile soil is needed. If you have it heavy, clayey, then all hope will be on the side, adventitious roots.
Therefore, we can conclude that in the middle lane, picking seedlings is extremely important. It will stimulate the development of lateral roots, lead to a thickening of the stem and restrain the pulling out of the seedlings before transplanting to a permanent place. A developed root system will improve plant nutrition and oxygenation.
A pick may not be used:
· If there are few seeds, since if the transplant is unsuccessful, you can lose seedlings.
· If you sow tomatoes directly into large containers with a gradual addition of soil.
