Australia plans to build world's largest 1.2 GW battery
Australia continues to amaze us and seems to have been heavily motivated by previous storage battery projects. It is worth remembering the 2017 project, when the construction of Tesla batteries with 150 megawatts was implemented. And also a project in South Australia, which will be fully operational by the end of this year at 300 megawatts.
So now the Australian authorities have set their sights on a project to build a battery in New South Wales, which will surpass all previous projects combined.
So the company CEP Energy released its announcement, according to which the largest battery in the world will be built with a total capacity of a considerable 1.2 GW. The implementation of this project will set a new benchmark for the whole world, but something tells me that the Australians themselves will want to update their records in the near future.
What are these batteries for?
The main task of such installations is, first of all, the accumulation of generated electricity due to solar panels and wind farms and the transfer of stored energy to the grid during hours when the generation of green energy is impossible (night, calm). In addition, such settings perfectly smooth out consumption peaks. And also very profitable, as they bring considerable profit to the enterprises that manage them.
But in this particular case, there is also a certain political struggle, since the installation of the mega battery is actively supported by W. Morris (former Prime Minister of New South Wales), who actively promotes green energy projects.
And the installation site in Kurri Kurri was not chosen by chance. Indeed, it is in this area that the current government (focused on traditional types of energy) insists on the implementation of new projects to increase coal and gas production. Straight chess game on a global scale.
When will the mega battery be commissioned?
According to preliminary calculations, the installation will start operating in 2023, but at this stage it is not even known who exactly will be the supplier of batteries for the installation.
