How to improve the quality of the Wi-Fi signal in an apartment in ten minutes

About a year ago, I noticed that the level of Wi-Fi signal reception from the router on the laptop decreased. This was invisible on the phones. Then I thought that the problem was in the laptop itself or at the provider. The problem intensified during the period of distance learning at school, when several people began to use the Internet at the same time.

Invited a specialist from the provider. He checked all the connections and, just in case, installed a new terminal on the cable, also checked the connections in the dashboard on the site. Before the router, the Internet is excellent. But the situation has not changed. And the acquisition of a new router before the arrival of the specialist instead of the old Dlink DIR-300 did not change the situation, but made the Internet for some reason only worse. I returned the DIR -300 to its place.

It is worth mentioning that the router is in another room and the signal goes to the laptop through the wall. But before, everything worked stably. And only recently I realized why such problems began.

A specialist from the provider then said the phrase: perhaps there is too much interference from other routers in this place of the house. Channels on frequency 2.4 GHz clogged and need a dual-frequency router capable of operating at a frequency 5 GHz. Somehow I did not attach any importance to this until I checked the signal strength and which channels were really clogged with a program in my smartphone (called a Wi-Fi analyzer). And he was surprised.

It was necessary to shift the router's channel to the least busy one. For this, there is a section in the analysis program. We bring the smartphone to the router and see what is the largest number of green stars on which channel. I chose the 12th.

You can install the inSSIDer or WiFiInfoView programs on your PC or laptop. But on a smartphone, these graphs look clearer.

He turned on the program for analyzing the signal on the street among houses and, for the sake of interest, checked it on the road. The channels are full of signals from routers (screenshots 2 and 3). But in the private sector, freedom at all frequencies - only 1 or 2 signals within a radius of tens of meters.

How did I reconfigure the router's channel and what did it give? We type the address in the browser: http://192.168.0.1 and enter the settings of your router by entering your username and password. For many, these are admin and admin by default. Next, go to the Wi-Fi connection settings section. Here are the sections in the settings of some models:

We change the channel to the least busy one, save and reload the router. All. After such a simple setting, the signal level on the laptop increased (two divisions were added) and according to measurements on www.speedtest.net decreased ping (response on the Internet connection). He became 4 ms. And before that I never went below 15 ms. The speed remained the same, but it became much more comfortable to work with a laptop on the network (pages open faster).

In addition to this simple router channel setup, there are other recommendations. If you are going to purchase a router for an apartment, then be sure to purchase a dual-band one, where there is a frequency 5 GHz and standard 802.11ac. Place the router in the center of the apartment or where the walls will not screen the signal. Place it not on the floor, but somewhere higher.
