Tricky ways to drill holes in a tile with a crown (no chips, overheating)
When it is necessary to cut large round holes in the tile during repairs, use a crown on a drill. Large holes are needed for pipes, sockets and switches.
Crowns are different: diamond, carbon, KS series and metal. A peculiar nozzle is inserted into the cartridge.
The markings are pre-applied on the tiles with a felt-tip pen or pencil. If the tile is smooth, you can stick construction tape or adhesive plaster over the cutting area.
This is necessary so that the crown does not slide over the surface of the tile. Sliding can be eliminated if the tool is turned on at low speed.
For drilling, choose nozzles that fit the shape, size of the holes.
If there is a crown available that is smaller in diameter than the required hole, then you do not have to buy a new core drill, but do so.
First, drill a round hole in the tile with an available crown (as in the picture below). Then draw a contour with a felt-tip pen. With tile nippers (parrots) we chop off the tile at the mark. We get a slightly larger hole. You can see more clearly in the picture:
It turns out quickly, smoothly. Nippers can cut any tile, even porcelain stoneware.
2 tips for working with a crown
It is better to moisten the place of drilling with water. This is necessary so that the tile does not crack and the crown does not overheat. The work is faster and there is no need to take breaks to cool the crown.
1. You can make a template from thick plywood with a hole.
Place on top of the tile, pour water into the hole and drill with a crown.
2. There is an easier trick with foam rubber or dishwashing sponge.
A round piece must be cut out of a piece of foam rubber or a sponge, which repeats the diameter (size) of the crown.
Then you need to insert the foam rubber into the nozzle, and then dip it into a container of water. The sponge will be saturated with liquid, and when drilling, the foam rubber will wet the tiles. Thus, the crown will last a long time and you will get an even cut.
