Why are there so many poplars in our cities and towns? We reveal the reasons

Tall poplars in the form of giant brooms have become an integral part of almost all settlements in our country. It is to these trees that we owe the summer "snowfall" of poplar fluff, which allergy sufferers and firefighters complain about. So why were they planted in such numbers? Let's figure it out!

Why are there so many poplars in our cities and towns? We reveal the reasons

Greening cities program

In the fifties of the last century, active restoration of cities destroyed during the war began. Together with this, the landscaping program was launched. To implement this plan, the government decided to massively plant poplars. The choice on these "skyscrapers" of the plant world fell because poplars are unpretentious, and also one of the fastest growing trees on the planet.

Natural air filter and oxygen producer

Poplars are not afraid of the polluted atmosphere of cities. They do an excellent job of cleaning the air by actively absorbing and recycling pollutants. Because of this quality, these trees were most often planted around industrial plants, along highways, in clusters of residential areas. In addition, per day, one adult poplar produces the amount of oxygen that is necessary for the breathing of four people.

Dries up the soil

In the process of life, poplar consumes a large amount of moisture. One adult tree absorbs up to nine hundred liters of water per day. Therefore, poplars were planted to drain the moisture-saturated soil.

Close fit capability

The poplar shape allows these trees to be planted close to each other, as well as close to multi-storey buildings. Poplar is unpretentious and will get water almost anywhere. Thus, it was possible to plant greenery in densely built up neighborhoods.

And also the elongated pyramidal shape of poplars simplifies maintenance - they do not need to be filed regularly to give a certain standard look. Most of these trees look the same. It creates a certain urban aesthetic.

Problems

The main disadvantage of this tree is down, which exacerbates the condition of allergy sufferers and is fire hazardous. During the summer "snowfall" the number of fires increases.

Previously, this problem did not exist, since only male poplars were used for planting in cities, which do not produce fluff. But when the communal services began to lag behind the landscaping schedule, they simply stopped sorting the seedlings into male and female. After such a negligent attitude, our cities began to fall asleep with poplar fluff.

Another problem is the weak root system and loose structure of poplar wood. Often, old trees and branches fall off even with little wind. This is very dangerous, since adult poplars have a significant mass and can damage buildings, cars, power lines; injure people. But this is already a question for public utilities, since they must clean up old or diseased trees in time.
