What is more profitable: raising a pig or buying meat? Blitz calculation of domestic pig breeding
The pig is a prolific and fast-growing animal. There is an opinion among ordinary people that pigs are unpretentious, eat everything and gain weight by leaps and bounds. All that remains for the breeder is to give her table scraps and vegetables from the garden, as well as occasionally remove manure. Then the pig will grow up and bring incredible income. Is it really? Let's figure it out!
Opinion
Andrey, FORUMHOUSE member:
“Once upon a time, thirty-five years ago, we kept over a dozen pigs and it was really profitable. Their main diet consisted of waste from the canteen, which was unmeasured: he arrived in the evening at the factory catering unit and took a couple of huge flasks of what was left from lunch. The payback for all this is a piece of meat to the cook after the slaughter of pigs.
They also fed grain, but practically did not pay for it. My grandfather worked on a petrol tanker and managed to change fuel for corn and grain. By the way, our pigs ate not fodder grain, but what was used for flour. There were no problems in terms of feeding domestic animals. And we kept not only pigs, but also chickens, nutria, rabbits. In the days of empty shelves in stores, it was a really profitable household.
We tried to bring animals into the capitalist reality that had come, but this business became extremely unprofitable. You need to buy feed and there are no workarounds! We have planted a lot of pumpkins in order to somehow save on grain, but pigs do not grow on this "grass". And at the same time they eat a lot!
We have been engaged in domestic pig breeding for two years - practically at zero. We took 10 piglets once, the other - 25 piglets. In general, more fuss than profit. Now you need to either keep a large livestock, but there is no money for this; or not waste time and buy meat in the store. "
Blitz calculation
It takes one ton of grain to raise a pig to slaughter weight. On the basis of a ton of feed grain costs an average of 13,000 rubles. But it still needs to be brought, so the final cost of grain will be approximately 14 thousand rubles.
Selling meat is a problem. The easiest option is to pass it in live weight. At the beginning of 2021, resellers give for pigs weighing up to 100 kilograms - 85-90 rubles / kg; more than 100 kilograms - 100 rubles / kg.
Let's say the live weight of the pig has gained 130 kilograms. It will be sold for 13 thousand rubles. And she ate only 14! And that's not counting drugs, vitamins and various supplements. Well, also the main thing: the piglet did not come from the forest - you also need to pay 2000–3500 rubles for it. As a result, the estimated loss from such pig breeding will be 3,500 rubles.
Slaughter option
If you slaughter a pig, then you can hand it over either in bulk at 175 rubles / kg (average price); or go to the fair and sell at 220 rubles / kg (average price tag). In this case, the meat yield from a pig weighing 130 kilograms will be approximately 100 kg.
Here you can already expect profit:
- from wholesale - 1 thous. rubles "navar";
- from retail sales, you can put in your pocket 5.5 thousand. rubles!
Next, we evaluate the work. We divide the received amount by 9 months (when buying a one and a half month old pig) and deduce the salary per month. It costs 611 rubles to pay for a month's care for one pig. If you keep 10 heads (and this is already hellish work), then 6.1 thousand will be released per month. Your lard will be a nice bonus.
Output
It is unprofitable and even unprofitable to keep pigs for profit without their own grain or some additional opportunities. Here you either need to organize a full-fledged pig farm; or not to bother and not run money into a hopeless nine-month turnover. It's also not worth having a couple of piglets for your meat - you can buy it in the store without any problems!
Where it is beneficial to keep pigs in small numbers
There will be a benefit if there is access to catering establishments, where you can buy food waste very cheaply. And there will also be a benefit if you have your own grain and compound feed. It is good to keep pigs on a farm where there are dairy cows - this way they will receive expired milk, on which they grow well.
