Significant technological achievements of Russia in 2020

Despite the fact that 2020 was difficult in many ways, and many of us happily spent it and are already enjoying 2021 with might and main. But in the past year there were many good things. In this article I will only talk about some of the technological achievements of Russia, which will show that in spite of everything, Russia is developing.

Commissioning of the floating nuclear power plant "Akademik Lomonosov"

A unique object, which has been under construction for a very long time, has finally begun work in the port of Pevek, which is located in Chukotka. In the spring of last year, the floating nuclear power plant was put into operation, and already in the middle of summer, the station was already transferring heat to the heating network of a city like Pevek.

Phased commissioning of the NICA collider in Dubna

This project has a truly global level and its implementation is monitored by the scientific community around the world. In fact, this attitude is difficult to overestimate, because something like this can only be implemented by countries that have advanced technologies in many areas.

Nuclotron based Ion Collider Acility (NICA) is a unique particle accelerator complex that is created on the basis of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research, which is geographically located in Dubna.

In 2020, an important stage in the launch of the synchrotron booster was completed, the purpose of which is to accelerate gold ions to incredible energies of 578 megaelectrons per nucleon.

By the end of 2022, it is planned to commission a large collider ring, and then scientists will be able to start their experiments. And what exactly they will be able to discover on the new installation is anyone's guess.

Commissioning of the icebreaker "Arktika"

Last year, the first icebreaker, fully developed and built in Russia, was put into operation. Before that, of course, other icebreakers were also commissioned, but all of them were laid down in Soviet times.

And the icebreaker "Arktika" is Russian pride, but more importantly, it is not the only icebreaker, and four icebreakers of a similar class are already being actively built at once. And at the Zvezda shipyard, the icebreaker Leader has already been laid, which will be more than twice as powerful as the Arktika.

First flight of MS-21-310 powered by PD-14 engines

Another important event took place literally at the finish line of 2020. An MS-21 aircraft powered entirely by Russian PD-14 engines took off into the sky. This is important in the sense that until this moment only one country in the world could build long-haul passenger aircraft and propulsion systems for them - the United States. And now Russia will be a worthy competitor in this regard.

Angara-A5 went into space again

After a long hiatus, which lasted six years, a heavy rocket of the Angara-A5 class again went into outer space. This is a really important event, which showed the ability of engineers to perform high-quality assembly of launch vehicles after the transfer of production from Moscow to Omsk. So already at this stage in the workshops of the enterprise are 6 missiles of the "Angara" class at different stages of readiness.

LSP "North Pole" launched

A unique object was launched from the Admiralty shipyards - a self-propelled platform of class 00903, built by order of Roshydromet. In fact, a vessel of this class simply has no analogues in the world, and by and large it is a logical replacement for drifting scientific stations.

Such an unusual appearance of the station is due to the specifics of the tasks to be performed by the LSP "North Pole".

Of course, this is not a complete list of technological advances that were achieved by Russian specialists in the past 2020. Therefore, in addition to the negative, we can remember a lot of positive things in the past, and I am sure there will be even more new and interesting things in 2021.
