How to feed peonies in spring so that they bloom with lush caps
I start taking care of peonies for the first time in April. I try not to be late in the spring with feeding, so that the sprouts are not higher than 10 cm.
There is nothing difficult to care for this flower culture. What should be done in April-May?
What to do with peonies in spring
Removal of last year's crop residues
The very first step is cleaning up last year's plant residues (it is better to do this in autumn), removing dry leaves from trees.
Loosening and removing weeds
The next step is to clean up the weeds around the bush, if any, and gently loosen the surface of the ground, which will provide good access to the roots of air.
Top dressing
To apply fertilizer, you need to dig a small groove around the bush. Peony rhizome consists of thick roots, which accumulate nutrients, and thin suction roots. It spreads around the bush underground.
In the prepared groove, you can pour organic matter in the form of compost (about a ten-liter bucket per bush) or humus (half a bucket per bush), and also pour it around the peony bush, which will serve as mulch (it will last longer moisture). If ash is available, then you can pour it around the bush a little.
After applying organic matter under the peonies, nitrogen fertilizers can be applied to build up the green mass in spring. Strong and powerful stems will give lush flower stalks by summer.
Ammonium nitrate can be used as nitrogen fertilizer. It will be required in the amount of 20-30 grams per 10 liters of warm water, depending on the age of the peonies. It is effective in both cool and warm soil.
Dilute ammonium nitrate in a small amount of water, and then pour it into a bucket (main volume). Next, stir the infusion and pour into the prepared groove (the liquid will not spill on the sides).
An infusion of mullein is also suitable, which is diluted with water in a ratio of 1 to 10. For this, a mother liquor is prepared. The container must be half filled with manure, and then you need to pour water there, stir and wait for several hours. The mother liquor is ready.
The second feeding is provided when laying the buds. At this time, complex fertilizers are applied with a large proportion of phosphorus and potassium, and boric acid is also used for the lush flowering of peonies. You will need 5 grams of substance per 1 liter of hot water. Then you need to bring the volume of liquid to 10 liters of ordinary water. With this solution, it is necessary to spray the plants on the leaf.
Thanks to the careful care of the peonies, the flowers will delight you in lush bloom in June.
