I got a hollow drill from China, which has a lot of possibilities. I tell you why I need it
Hello everyone! Recently I received another package from China and this time I received an interesting drill - a cutter, which is hollow inside. It is also called a cork drill, but it has nothing to do with the production of corks.
Today I will show you what tasks this drill can perform and at the end I will tell you what I need it for..
And so, let's start with its features and appearance. This cork drill is made of carbon steel and has 4 blade-like cutting elements.
These drills come in eight different diameters from 8 to 40 mm. The size indicated on the drill shank corresponds to its inner diameter.
The outer diameter is almost twice the inner diameter (for example, if the drill is 12 mm, then its outer diameter will be almost 24 mm).
In the "body" of the drill, there is a special groove 5 cm long and a little wider than its inner diameter (I will tell you about its purpose a little later).
Such cork drills are also sold in our country, but in China they are several times cheaper. The price depends on the diameter of the drill.
What can you do with a cork drill?
1. Since this is a drill, first of all, they can of course drill holes. The drill bites perfectly into the wood and makes fairly neat holes that do not require additional processing.
In this regard, it may well replace the pen drill and the Forstner drill. (only in the latter case, it will be necessary to additionally drill the core with an ordinary drill or cut it out with a chisel). But this is not its main function.
2. The cork drill can also be used to make fasteners for joining timber structures.. However, in order to make them, it is necessary to drill strictly at an angle of 90 degrees, to the same depth and preferably select a drill, the outer diameter of which will correspond to the thickness of the board (then no additional treatment). Otherwise, the connection will not turn out neat and crooked, like mine.
3. As you might have guessed, the main function of a cork drill is to make furniture dowels. Lookshort video below. But that's not all!
Why do I need a cork drill?
The advantage of a cork drill is that it can be used to cut dowels not from the end of the board (as is the case with purchased ones), but from its front side (face). With the help of such dowels, I hide the caps of the screws in the tree. I'm sure you already guessed how I do it. If not, then you can read more about this in my previous article.
