"The more insulation, the better!" - this is certainly suitable for insulation, but sometimes it just doesn't make sense. And my house is a prime example of this.

Friends, a big hello to everyone. In the comments to articles about the insulated blind area of my house, I saw different opinions ...

Will 50 mm of insulation be enough for the foundation and blind area? I explain at my house why this is enough.

There were both positive reviews and a lot of criticism about the materials I used. And some were confused by the thickness of the EPS, which I used for insulation.

I explain my choice.

Insulation of the blind area is done in order to prevent freezing of the base under the house.

Given that the earth heats itself, you just need to prevent this heat from quickly evaporating. There are many examples of the use of EPS with a thickness of exactly 50 mm on the Internet. And the most reliable is the site of one of the largest companies producing EPS.

On the official website of "Penoplex", in one of the sections about the insulation of the blind area, I found just such a sign.

I live 120 km from St. Petersburg, and just 5 cm of EPS is enough for my house.

Insulation of the foundation is a slightly different story.

Here, in addition to ensuring freezing, it is also tedious to reduce heat loss from the house, through the foundation. But why did I insulate everything again with only 50 mm EPS?

Here you need to take into account the fact that in my house the foundation slab itself is insulated from the inside of the house. And there is 100 mm of insulation.

✅ It is this layer that reduces heat loss.

And those 50 mm on the sides of the foundation, it turns out, again prevent only from freezing, which is sufficient in this case.

But only practice shows the best.

So far, in the two years that the box is at home, nothing bad has happened. So the theory is still working. Although this is certainly not a period ...
