Installation of thin double-sided knives in an electric plane and a device for sharpening these knives
If you do not have experience in replacing such knives or have recently purchased a plane with such knives, then the article material may be useful for you.
These knives are installed in many models of electric planers, and in order for the plane to plan smoothly during operation without distortions and other deviations, the knives must be installed and adjusted correctly.
Installation and configuration
First, you need to remove the knives from the drum. Let me remind you that blocks with knives are held by surprise in the plane's drum. That is, the mounting bolts for removing the knives must be rotated clockwise, tightening them.
If the plane was already in operation, and usually it is, then you need to clean all parts of sawdust and resin.
Such thin knives have a size of 5.5x1 mm. the length depends on the model of the planer and is usually 82 or 100 mm. These knives are double-sided and the knife is simply flipped when one side is dull.
After turning the knife over or replacing it with a new one, the knife block is assembled and placed in the plane.
In such knife blocks there are also a couple of hexagon screws. They are located at the edges of the knife block and allow you to set the parallelism of the knife to the sole of the planer.
These screws can be unscrewed prior to installation so that they are flush with the unit.
After replacing the knife and installing the block in the groove of the shaft, you need to unscrew the middle screw and slightly fix the block. The blade of the knife should be flush with the side of the sole of the planer, you can align it with a metal ruler.
The height of the knife is adjusted on a fixed sole by applying a metal ruler or square to it. It is also good if there is a side light.
Using the hex key, set the height of the knife so that it slightly touches the ruler. For better tuning, you can shake the drum back and forth a little to catch the high point.
The ruler is placed first from one edge of the sole, and then from the other.
When the blade is aligned, unscrew the outermost bolts to tighten the blade block.
Sometimes, after tightening the knife, the setting gets lost, so it is better to check the level of the knife again on the left and right edges.
If the setting is lost, then slightly loosen the extreme screws and repeat the setting.
Do the same with the second knife.
Sharpener
Although these knives are considered disposable, they can still be sharpened.
Paired knives are best sharpened at the same time. For this purpose, I made a small device from a bar with a section of 40x50 mm, and the length is slightly longer than the length of the knife.
Then flip through the gallery to see the sequence of making such a device.
Using a circular saw, a triangular cut is made in the bar. The saw blade is set at 45 °.
After cutting out the triangle, lower the saw to make another cut for the knife. The knife is 5.5 mm high, so the saw should make a groove of about 4 mm. We also move the parallel stop of the saw towards the saw blade so that the depth of the new groove is about 1 mm.
The knives are fixed in the device with self-tapping screws with a press washer.
Such a device can be useful in cases when you need to stitch something quickly, and the store is far away or it is closed. Sharpening takes literally a dozen minutes and you can work
