Seasonal tips for the gardener: how to plant cabbage so that it grows large and juicy
The conversation will be about white cabbage. This year I chose 2 popular mid-season varieties: Slava 1305 and Losinoostrovskaya 8. Both varieties are distinguished by good shelf life during winter storage in the basement andexcellent taste. Perfect for fermentation and fresh consumption.
In mid-April, she sowed cabbage for seedlings in a mobile plastic box in the greenhouse. In late May-early June, I plant young plants in open ground in a permanent place.
The site must be selected open, without shading. Cruciferous plants should not be the precursors of cabbage. Cabbage grows well after pumpkin, zucchini, legumes and nightshade crops.
What to do before planting cabbage seedlings
It is necessary to fill the soil well, as the head of cabbage will take a lot of nutrients from the soil. It is necessary to add humus, peat, mineral fertilizers (20-30 grams per 1 sq. m). The bed should be dug up with a shovel and holes should be made 15 cm deep in a checkerboard pattern.
How to plant, what to add when planting. Treatment against pests and diseases
Cabbage seedlings should be planted at a distance of 40-60 cm from each other. Leave 60 cm between the rows. This culture does not like crowdedness. But before planting, cabbage roots should be treated from pests (for example, Decis, Aktara) and diseases (for example, use the drug Oxyhom).
For this, it is necessary to prepare a tank mixture and spray the root system of young plants. May beetle larvae and cabbage flies, which can destroy the entire root system and the green mass of young plants, are especially dangerous for planted seedlings.
Please note that the use of chemicals on the cabbage is recommended prior to the formation of the head of cabbage (fork).
Then add 2-3 tbsp to each hole. spoons of wood ash. Dolomite flour can be added instead of the latter. Cabbage does not like acidic soils, so the land needs to be limed periodically, which is used for this crop.
You can put eggshells at the bottom of the hole, which will repel the bear, if it is found in your area.
At the bottom of the hole, you can put 1-2 tbsp. tablespoons of bone meal (this is a natural phosphorus fertilizer). It also deacidifies the soil and contributes to the good development of the root system. All components of the hole must be mixed with earth and poured with water.
A seedling should be planted in the resulting gruel, slightly compacting the ground with your palms on top. Around the root circle, it is necessary to make bee keepers so that when watering, the water does not spread to the sides.
After planting the seedlings, it needs to be watered and temporarily covered with plastic bottles for better survival.
