Profiled sheet cannot be cut with a grinder - myth or reality? Understanding the issue

In the vastness of the Internet, information is spread that the professional sheet should in no case be cut with a grinder. According to the authors of this idea, the disc causes heating and melting of the protective layers, and this leads to rapid corrosion of the metal. And also sparks damage the paintwork, leaving there black ugly dots. "Experts" call for cutting metal with hand tools. Is this really so - read on.

Cutting physics

Profiled sheet is a puff cake based on steel. This is followed by a thin layer of zinc, and only then is the primer, anti-corrosion coating and paint. All of these barriers protect the metal from rust.

Zinc is the main obstacle to corrosion. According to the "experts", the high temperature at the cut site destroys the zinc coating, which leads to metal corrosion. Sounds like the truth, but ...

The melting point of zinc, at which the protective layer of the profiled sheet is allegedly broken, is 419.6 ° C. Even if you set the grinder to maximum speed, you will not be able to get such a temperature.

If the temperature at the cut site exceeds at least 350 degrees, then the disc will simply begin to crumble. And the paint with such heating will become charred and ignite. The argument that the grinder violates the zinc coating of the profiled sheet is false and unfounded.

Any method of cutting profiled sheet, be it cold or hot, breaks the protective layers and exposes the steel. Even ordinary metal scissors break open the anti-corrosion coating. Otherwise, do not cut the profiled sheet! But you just need to cut it correctly.

How to cut a profiled sheet with a grinder

There are several simple rules that will help you to cut high-quality corrugated board with any disc.

• Apply masking tape to the cut site and apply the markings on it.
• Set the angle grinder to minimum speed.
• Pour the water over the masking tape.
• Cut with short strokes, cutting no more than 15 centimeters of metal in one contact.

If these rules are followed, the cut is smooth and free of burrs.

But you can make the task easier and buy a specialized disc for working on corrugated board. These are produced and sold - this is not a problem.

Important!

Whatever method of cutting the metal, the protective layer will still be broken. In order to prevent rust from crawling out in conspicuous places, carry out anti-corrosion treatment of the cut: prime and paint the cut.
