Tests of the most powerful pure hydrogen bomb

Testing of the most powerful hydrogen bomb, which received the official name RLS-220, and the unofficial stately name "Tsar Bomba". The length of this bomb was a considerable 8 meters with a diameter of two meters.

In order to be able to transport this bomb, part of the tanks and even the hatches of the bomb compartments had to be removed from the TU-95V bomber.

The test site for this "Tsar Bomba" was selected part of the Severny Island, which is geographically located in the Arctic Ocean.

The detonation of the radar-220 was carried out at an altitude of four kilometers above sea level. At the moment of detonation of the charge, the plane that dropped it was already at a distance of 45 km from the point of detonation, but despite such an impressive distance, the blast wave overtook the plane and was so strong that it literally turned his.

The pilots managed to cope with the abnormal situation, and they safely leveled and landed the winged machine.

The explosion turned out to be so powerful that as a result, a fiery sphere with a diameter of 8 kilometers was formed. And the explosion from the explosion could be observed at a distance of thousands of kilometers, despite the overcast in that area.

At the same time, the diameter of the dust column literally in a couple of seconds already reached an incredible 10 km.

The mushroom cloud rose to a height of 65 km, which for a minute is equal to the height of eight mountains such as Everest, and the diameter of the mushroom cloud reached 90 km. And in Norwegian and Finnish houses, glass even flew out.

As the test showed, despite its clear success, the radar-220 turned out to be an impractical weapon, since after its detonation, the winning side received a scorched and uninhabitable desert.

This test served as the impetus for the signing of a treaty between Great Britain, the Soviet Union and America. a partial test ban treaty, and after that all further explosions were carried out underground way.

The detonation video itself and the propaganda video were declassified by Rosatom in honor of the 75th anniversary of the Russian nuclear industry.

The video itself, which tells the story of the creation of the bomb and the further video of the Tsar Bomba test during the first half hour, you can watch below.
