How to paint previously painted wood: the subtleties of technology
Powered by FORUMHOUSE
Before painting previously painted wood, you need to know some technological subtleties. This will help to obtain an even high-quality coating and preserve the structural properties of the tree for a long time. How to prepare previously painted wood, as well as how to apply paintwork - read on.
How to determine what paint the wood has been painted
Before painting the old coating, it is necessary to select a composition similar to the previously applied one. For example, only acrylic paint should be applied to acrylic paint, and oil paint to oil paint. These compositions are incompatible and it simply will not work to paint one another.
Use these tips to determine what paint the surface has been painted with.
- Oil paint forms a thick semi-matt film. A distinctive feature of old oil paint is a yellowish tint. And this shade appears regardless of the color of the paint: the pigments fade, and the coating takes on the color of drying oil. And also peeling can be considered a feature of old oil paint on the surface.
- A film of alkyd enamel is similar in structure to oil paint, but it is thinner and does not have a yellowish tint. A distinctive feature of old alkyd enamel is uneven tarnishing of color: alkyd coating fade with spots.
- To distinguish latex paint from oil and alkyd paint, you need to pick off a piece of the coating. In alkyd and oil paints, the coating is fragile like a shell, while in latex it is elastic like rubber.
- The appearance of the silicone paint film resembles oil paint, but it is distinguished by the absence of cracks and a yellowish tint. The structure of the silicone paint coating resembles a sanded mineral surface.
- If the surface gets dirty, it means that a water-soluble paintwork material with a high chalk content has been applied to it. But in order to accurately determine the type of water-based paint, you need to conduct an experiment - wet the coating.
- Drops do not collect on the wetted surface of water-soluble paints, as happens with organic paintwork - this is their main distinguishing feature. If the wetted coating has darkened, but at the same time has not lost its integrity, then it is acrylic paint - its binder resin is resistant to water.
How to remove old paint
The preparation of a previously painted surface should be started by removing the old paint. It can be torn off with an ordinary spatula. If the work with a spatula is difficult, a construction hairdryer will help. When heated, the old paintwork will begin to bubble and easily come off the wood. Be careful when working with a construction hairdryer - the wood can ignite.
Grinding
After the old paint is removed, you need to proceed to sanding. This is done with ordinary sandpaper. The purpose of this procedure is to remove all roughness. For the best effect, sand with several types of sandpaper. For example: the first step is to use sandpaper with a grit of 60, then 80, and after 100. Reduce the grit size until you are satisfied with the quality of the surface to be prepared.
Cracks and other defects on the surface should be filled with wood filler. When the putty rises, it is necessary to grind again. Be sure to remove dust from the surface after sanding. If there are oily or greasy stains on the surface, neutralize them with a degreaser.
Primer
The next most important preparatory stage is the primer. This is an indispensable process, without which it is impossible to achieve a high-quality and durable paintwork. It is necessary to prime the surface in two layers. After applying the first coat, let it dry for 10-12 hours. You can paint in 24 hours after applying the second coat of primer.
When choosing a primer, give preference to formulations with antiseptic properties. Antiseptics will protect wood from fungus and rotting, thereby prolonging its service life.
Painting Tips
When the primer is dry, you can start painting. Here are some tips for staining wood.
- Choose a wide, flat brush. The roller is only suitable for perfectly flat surfaces.
- Paint along the grain so that the composition is absorbed as efficiently as possible into the surface.
- To avoid dripping, dip the brush no more than не into the paint.
- Apply paint in at least two coats. Maintain sufficient spacing between coats. Let the first coat dry.
