Israel partially banned the sale of raspberries: we reveal the reason for the "dislike" for this berry

We cannot even imagine summer without fresh raspberries, and winter without the most beloved jam in the world from these healing aromatic berries! Raspberries for us are the taste of childhood, summer, happiness. But in Israel, this berry has a completely different attitude. Since April 2021, raspberries cannot be bought there either fresh or frozen. They even banned jam with whole berries! So far, of course, this only applies to shops with a kosher certificate. Why such a strange, in our opinion, ban was introduced in this country - read on!

What is the fault of the raspberry?

The fact is that in Israel since ancient times there has been a tradition to eat only kosher foods. Kosher means - conforming to the canons, natural, pure. This applies to crop cultivation, slaughtering, processing of raw materials and composition of products. They should not contain chemistry, parasites and everything that can somehow harm human health.

Israel's Chief Rabbinate has long had "bad" intentions with raspberries and eventually declared them not kosher. The unique structure of the berry is to blame: its numerous and small-sized seeds (by the way - the most delicious!), grown together into a complex fruit have voids between them, in which small insects can live.

It is extremely difficult to clean raspberries from unwanted guests, and there is no guarantee that the insect "filling" will not enter the body of a person who uses these fruits. In other words, raspberries have an undesirable impurity, which, according to the established canons, cannot be eaten. It turns out that whole fresh berries and all products made from it are not considered kosher.

But that's not all!

A long-standing dispute has not yet been resolved in Israel: is raspberry a shrub or a tree? In other words, it cannot be recognized as a fruit or a berry in Israel. If a raspberry fruit is the fruit of a tree, then it must obey the canons of kosher. And this means a ban on eating in the early years of ripening and a refusal to eat fruits in the seventh year of the harvest. But practically no one observes this even in Israel, where there are not so many raspberries.

Raspberries will now have to stand on a par with products prohibited according to the kosher canons, such as sturgeon, black caviar, lobsters, shrimps, and oysters. She is not entitled to a certificate of "quality" and a useful sweet tooth must leave the store shelves. But not all, we are talking only about shops that have a kosher certificate. And this does not apply to all raspberries yet. Some farms grow this berry in accordance with the sanitary requirements of the Rabbinate. Only imported raspberries fell under the total ban. Even the kosher certificate issued in other countries does not save the imported berry.
