Taichzhun Thermal Power Plant is the largest source of air pollution in the world with a pleasant appearance
Despite the rather rapid development of the so-called green generation, thermal power plants operating on thermal coal are still actively exploited all over the world.
And today I want to tell you about the Taichzhun TPP, which until 2011 was the largest TPP in the world, and now occupies an honorable second place (after the TuoKetuo TPP, China). But despite the lost leadership in power, it is still the world leader in emissions of harmful substances into the atmosphere.
Location and capacity of Taichzhun TPP
One of the most powerful thermal power plants in the world is located on the island of Taiwan and its installed capacity is 5824 MW. The station has 10 power units with a capacity of 550 MW and uses thermal coal delivered from Australia as fuel.
In addition, the station has four auxiliary units with a capacity of 70 MW, but they are already running on natural gas. In total, all blocks produce about 42 billion. kWh
Attractive look and unattractive carbon footprint
In order to make it more attractive, the local authorities ordered to decorate the pipes of the station. This approach really gave the TPP a more attractive look.
So the artists decided to decorate the gray pipes in bright colors and decided to apply silhouettes of birds as a pattern. But Taichzhun TPP is the world leader in emissions of harmful substances into the atmosphere.
Understanding the global decarbonization trend, local authorities imposed restrictions on the station's operation. For example, it is forbidden to turn on all 10 blocks at the same time, and they (blocks) must not work for more than 240 days a year.
In addition, it is also planned to replace coal blocks with gas blocks of increased capacity and much more environmentally friendly. And these measures should reduce the plant's harmful emissions by 24%.
Well, if the authorities really succeed in reducing emissions, it will be great, but in the meantime, it looks very even the cute pipes of the Taichzhong TPP every year more and more clog our atmosphere and worsen the already bad ecology.
We can only hope that our children will receive a clean or at least not completely polluted planet, in which there will be forests, clean rivers and lakes, as well as clean air.
