What are the quarters in the window openings for? My version of their manufacture
Many people believe that inserting windows into the window opening and covering the foam from the outside of the walls with a plastic corner or plaster will be enough. The windows themselves give a large share in the heat loss of the house, and installed without protection against blowing out, the heat will be lost even more.
According to all the rules for installing windows, so-called quarters are needed. This is the outer step in the window opening (except for the window sill):
This ledge is called a quarter for the reason that for the maximum thermal resistance of the window opening, the thickness of the element must be ¼ of the wall thickness.
In my case, with a wall thickness of 400 mm aerated concrete, the quarters should be 10 cm thick. But in the future, wall insulation is planned. So I decided to stick with the dimensions 75 mm thick and 50 mm wide. And to make them so far on one window, access to which after I remove the inner forests will be difficult.
Sawed quarters from block cuttings on the lathe. It is very difficult to manually saw such small elements with a hacksaw on aerated concrete - the geometry will not be ideal and there is a risk of constantly breaking them.
I climbed to the window with a set of glue-foam, aerated concrete trowel, level and props. I cleaned the vertical edge of the window openings with a float. So that due to the differences (protrusions) of the blocks, gaps do not form.
It is easy to glue vertical elements. In 10-20 seconds they already hold on to themselves.
Immediately after gluing, horizontal elements were propped up with boards and bars. I did not drill the elements and screw them onto the self-tapping screws. The width of the window is small, three props were enough.
Upon completion, he dismantled the horizontal scaffolding that rested on the partition walls.
It will be the same on other windows. But on other windows it is not urgent, I will do it closer to the moment of installing the windows.
Someone makes quarters from EPS (Penoplex), sticks them on glue-foam too. Someone buys low density aerated concrete (D200). I saw videos where self-builders cut down quarters in window openings. All in order not to narrow the size of the windows. This is, of course, more difficult. It is better to immediately lay the windows 10 cm wider.
In any case, if you have quarter-less windows installed, they can be made of aerated concrete or Penoplex and glued.
