The first parts of the unique SKIF synchrotron have been created in Russia

The employees of the Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences manufactured the first elements of the equipment of the future General Use Center - the Siberian Ring Photon Source (SKIF). They turned out to be two dipole magnets of the booster synchrotron.

Synchrotron SKIF and its implementation

The first serial elements of the SKIF complex turned out to be a pair of magnets, the peculiarity of which lies in the fact that the pole is designed in such a way that a uniform field is simultaneously formed inside the magnet, and the so-called gradient field.

Due to this unusual combination, it will be possible to clearly focus the particles. In addition, such magnets will be able to perform several tasks at once: creating a closed orbit, accurately focusing the beam, etc. Moreover, all these processes will take place in a fairly wide energy corridor from 200 MeV to 3000 MeV.

In total, it is planned to create 28 focusing and 32 defocusing magnets, and the largest of them weighs no less than 1.2 tons.

Also, the use of such unusual magnets will allow engineers to create the synchrotron itself much more compact (compared to Western analogues) and, accordingly, cheaper. In addition to savings, the new installation will be able to produce specific parameters that scientists need to carry out a full range of future laboratory tests.

In addition, as E. Levin (head of the project office of the CTC "SKIF"), a distinctive feature of the project is its extremely fast implementation.

By the end of 2023, scientists will have to launch the accelerator, as well as the first experimental station. And by the end of 2024, to commission five more experimental stations.

So, according to Levin, at the moment two magnets are completely ready. But they have not yet passed the full range of tests on special test benches.

After all construction work is completed, Russian scientists will use the Center for Collective Use. "SKIF" is a unique source of synchrotron radiation, which experts attributed to the generation 4+. This entire center is being implemented within the framework of the Science and Universities project, as well as the Akademgorodok 2.0 program in the Koltsovo science city.

So we will wait for the completion of the project and a whole scattering of scientific discoveries in various fields.
