Not waste, but gold! What are the benefits of eggshells in the garden
What we are used to thinking of as food waste can provide tangible benefits in the garden and vegetable garden. For example, potato peelings are a nutritious and beneficial fertilizer. And banana peels treated with boric acid are an effective remedy for ants. Today we will tell you what application can be found in eggshells in the garden.
The most valuable natural fertilizer
Eggshells are a rich source of calcium. But in addition to it, the hard egg shell contains more than 25 elements, among which it is worth highlighting silicon, molybdenum, fluorine, sulfur, sodium, iodine, copper, zinc and iron. These substances are included in the mandatory diet of plants. And most importantly, this entire set of valuable nutrients is free!
To increase the fertility of the soil, it is necessary to grind the eggshell to a powder state and evenly scatter it over the surface of the soil. Or, you can simply add this powder while digging up the garden. Powder made from shells of 4–5 eggs is enough for one square meter. You need to make this top dressing once in the spring, and once in the fall. A blender or coffee grinder will help you grind the hard shell into powder.
Important! Shell powder is not only the most valuable natural fertilizer, but also an effective means of reducing the acidity of the soil. In addition, this fertilizer saves plants from such a dangerous fungal disease as "Black Leg".
You can make an infusion from the shell. This requires a shell from raw eggs - it contains more micro and macro elements. Rinse the shell so that there is no protein left inside. Further, without crushing, put it in a liter jar, filling the container to the top; pour warm water and leave to infuse for 5 days at room temperature. Shake the jar with the solution every day!
After the specified time, dilute the infusion in five liters of water and water the plants. Water the plants with the fertilizer obtained in this way should be once every two weeks. Pour the remaining shells with water and also leave for five days to prepare a new infusion. You can use this shell 3-4 more times.
Useful advice! The shells must be collected in advance so that a sufficient amount of it has accumulated by the beginning of the season. You need to store the shell in cardboard boxes, and so that it does not emit odors, it should be washed and dried before storage, or calcined in the oven. To do this, put the shells on a baking sheet and place them in an oven preheated to 95 degrees for 15 minutes. So the hard egg shell will be stored for a long time, without emitting unpleasant odors.
Garden pest control
There are two effective options for using pest shells. The first is if slugs overwhelm the garden. In order to protect the planting from these soft-bodied pests, it is necessary to grind the shell into fragments ranging in size from 5 to 15 mm. Mix these shards with hot paprika and scatter around the plant, thus creating a barrier. The slug will not overcome this obstacle, since, firstly, it will be damaged by the sharp edges of the shells; and secondly, he will receive a chemical burn from hot pepper.
With an invasion of the bear, from the egg shell, they make a bait that is destructive for these insects. The shell must be ground to fragments of 2–5 mm, mixed with unrefined sunflower oil, and buried between the beds. Medvedka smells the oil well and goes to it. Then she eats the bait and dies after a while. This is because the insect cannot digest and remove the shell from the body.
Seedling cells
Egg shells are excellent seedling cups. To use the shell as a cup, you need to remove the upper part of the shell, and make a drainage hole in the bottom with a pushpin. Before use, an impromptu glass must be rinsed and dried.
During seed development and seedling growth, the shell will supply the plant with the necessary micro and macro elements. When the seedlings grow up and the time comes to transplant them into the garden, it will be enough to crush the shell, violating its integrity and bury it in the garden along with the sprout.
