How to make lightning protection for a private house: accessories and installation

Recently the weather has not been happy: it rains with thunderstorms, then hail with a stormy wind. More and more news flashes about how lightning strikes residential buildings and industrial facilities. Doing so will cause fires or damage electrical equipment. To protect the house from such a scourge, you need to make lightning protection. What accessories are needed for this and how to install - read on.

A bit of theory

First, a short definition. Lightning protection (lightning rod) is a special device to ensure the safety of a building, as well as property and people in it, from lightning strikes. The lightning rod consists of three parts: a lightning rod; down conductor; grounding.

There are three main types of lightning protection: rod (mast), cable (ridge) and mesh. In IZhS, rod lightning rods are most often used; less often - ridge. Mesh is used mainly in industrial facilities.

The protection zone of a rod lightning rod is a 45 ° cone. But not every building can fit under this "dome" and it is more reasonable to install two rod lightning rods at different ends of the roof; or mount a catenary wire lightning rod passing along the ridge.

Accessories for mounting a lightning rod

For the construction of lightning protection, you will need:

• steel corner 50 * 50 mm - 9 meters;
• metal strip 20–40 mm wide;
• cross-shaped connector for strip and bar;
• aluminum rod with a diameter of 8 mm (down conductor);
• mast with a diameter of 16 mm with a holder;
• holders of a bar (down conductor) are roofing;
• bar (down conductor) holders for the facade.

Important: the grounding of lightning protection must be independent and in no case connected to the grounding circuit of the electrical wiring!

Mounting

• Remove a layer of soil 0.7 meters thick on an area of ​​1.5 * 1.5 meters. You should get a flat square pit with a depth of 70 cm.
• At a distance of one meter from each other, drive three three-meter corners (conventionally - pins) into the ground. The pins should form a regular triangle with sides of 1 meter.

• Weld the strips with a triangle to the pins and bring one end of the strip above the level of the future blind area. The strip, if it is not galvanized, must be painted to protect it from corrosion.

• Fasten the 8 mm aluminum bar to the wall using the front brackets. The distance between the fasteners is 0.8-1 meter.
• Mount the ground loop with the down conductor using a cross-shaped connector. Fill up the hole.
• Lead the down conductor (rod) to the roof and fix it to the roof holders. The distance between the fasteners is 0.8-1 meter.

• Fix the mast holder on the ridge, install the mast and mount it with the down conductor.

The height of the mast or their number must be calculated using a special formula, but it is easier to do this in any online calculator for calculating lightning protection.

Rod lightning protection with one mast is suitable for a one- or two-storey house with simple architecture. Buildings of a large area and number of storeys must be protected with a combined lightning rod, consisting of mast and catenary wire lightning rods.
