I learned about 2 dressings for Hortensias in the height of summer. Now I do every July
Do you want to see beautiful hydrangeas in your area, full of color and health? Then a fiery salute, restless fellow flower growers!
Today on the agenda - 2 garden plant feeding - what the doctor ordered. And July, like the height of summer, is the time to emerge from the cucumber patch and pamper hydrangeas in the name of beauty.
In the garden schedule, these dressings follow one after the other, like a motorcade following an official's Lexus. Because the first, which is not quite feeding, creates favorable conditions for the absorption of nutrition by the hydrangea. And the second one already directly delivers the nutrients necessary in the middle of summer, which help the plant to bloom more abundantly, more picturesquely and more promising in terms of the chances of getting on the page of social networks.
My experience: I planted hydrangeas near the fence of the plot from the side of the street. I don't know if it's a coincidence or not, but after I began to pay a little more attention to the hydrangea feeding schedule and began to do these 2 feeding, every summer my plants are photographed. Teenagers - for Instagram, ladies of venerable age - for Odnoklassniki.
The first feeding of hydrangeas, which is not really feeding
Many gardeners deliberately ignore the recommendations related to the acid-base parameters of the soil. It seems like this thing almost does not depend on us, I do not know the pH of my land and I don’t want to know, so I’ll stand on the sidelines. Very reckless!
Take our hydrangeas, for example. They are one of the few garden plants that respect acidic soil. The optimum soil pH for them is 5.5. If the pH rises above 6-6.5, then the hydrangea simply cannot absorb any substances from the soil. No wonder the plant is starving and losing bloom. There is no time for photos for "Dnoklassniki"!
And here, comrade florist, there is a great danger. I, like most citizens, water the garden with tap water. Which is usually ugly tough and alkalizes the soil, pushing the pH further and further away from the desired slightly acidic indicator.
To prevent this outrage from happening:
- At least once to spend money and buy litmus strips for measuring pH for 100 rubles. They will be enough for more than one season, and the instructions are understandable even to the Yorkshire terrier of my young mistress.
- If the soil under the hydrangea is NOT slightly acidic, but tends towards neutrality or (holy, holy!) Alkaline environment, make a "top dressing": 20 g of citric acid per 10 liters of water.
Friendly advice: Do not forget to dissolve the crystals in a glass of warm water in advance, and only then pour into the main volume. Once I was stirring a lemon immediately in a bucket and it probably looked very funny from the outside, but the crystals still treacherously remained at the bottom of the sediment
I will make a reservation that this is a temporary measure. If you do not change the composition of the soil, then due to watering with hard water, the pH of the soil will again become alkaline. Therefore, add sour peat, pine needles, sphagnum moss to the soil for hydrangeas.
A nutritious treat for hydrangeas in July
Now that the acidity of the soil helps the hydrangea to properly absorb nutrients in full, it's time to give your favorite flower a treat.. There is nothing better in July than a duo of potassium and phosphorus:
- Scatter a handful of potassium salt and superphosphate under the bush. For reliability, you can lightly embed the granules in the soil. Then - mandatory watering, so that the fertilizer begins to dissolve in the soil faster and nourish the bush in the name of a beautiful flowering. So you can forget about feeding hydrangeas until the end of August and the beginning of September.
- A simple option is to buy a flower fertilizer in sachets like Agricola, dilute and pour. Simple, angry, also with trace elements. Look at the composition: there should be more phosphorus and potassium than nitrogen. For example, the option "For berry plants" is very suitable for the entire flower garden:
So, first, we make the soil slightly acidic, then we apply fertilizer. Enjoy the beauty of hydrangeas and free up memory on your phone for photos against the background of flowering bushes!
