How and when to collect and dry garlic so that it is stored for a long time. From a neighbor, I learned what my mistake was.

I have been growing garlic in my garden for a long time and have learned how to grow and harvest good harvests of large garlic.

First of all, it depends on the characteristics of the variety, but proper care also plays a role. I usually start harvesting garlic with a couple of arrows, which I do not break off.

When the arrow is straightened and the cone with the seeds is opened, it is time to harvest the garlic. In addition, I look at the weather conditions, if rain is predicted, then I think that I should not wait and start harvesting in order to be in time before the precipitation falls.

Sequence of work.

Having dug out the garlic, I do not remove it immediately, but leave it on the beds to dry. After sunset, I trim the tops, leaving 12 cm and a lobe.

Now I put the culture in a dark place so that it can still dry up. After that, the culture is stored until spring, then it dries up.

Once I went to visit a neighbor, and she was just harvesting garlic. My neighbor is already aged and has extensive experience in country matters.

She taught me a lot too. So, I asked her how she stores garlic, and it turned out that she kept it for a long time and did not deteriorate.

It turns out that you need to properly dry it. She also dries the bulbs in the garden after digging, but does not cut the tops, but dries in a dark place for some time not cut off.

This is so that the nutrients from the stems are transferred to the bulb. A month before harvesting, garlic should not be watered. For half a month, the garlic lies uncut, and then the tops should be cut off, and the lobe should be left.

After drying, the garlic is placed in a box, at the bottom of which it is filled with coarse salt. Covers a box with a newspaper, arranges the bulbs in a row, closes them with a newspaper.

Covers the top with a newspaper. Stores indoors at room temperature. This method is new to me, but I will definitely try. Old shoe boxes come in handy.
