Do you want your rose garden to endure the cold weather with dignity and delight you with flowering next year? Then a fiery fireworks, comrade florist and part-time connoisseur of beauty! Today on the agenda - 3 important points of the August work on the flower bed, helping our beauties to withstand the cold with dignity. Feel free to put aside the cans / embroidery / liqueur and... wonderful outdoor hours await you! Hurray, comrades!

Rose and August: still blooming, but already thinking about rounding off

Weather forecast charts are no match for our garden plants. They already know exactly what is happening in nature. AND roses, sensing the approach of autumn already from the beginning of August, quickly rebuild:

  • New shoots almost do not grow, and the old ones are busy with important business - they grow stiff. Still: if a minus hits, the unripe branches will freeze and rot.
  • The appearance of buds also naturally fades away: the rose now needs to go into a state of rest.
  • In order to fall into this peace, the plant slows down life processes, something like the metabolism of us, humans and human women.

It was a summer resident with a peasant's haircut who told me that she was not a human being, but a human being. I bit off a wormy apple from the healthy side, helplessly mumbled "Uh-huh" and, without looking back, retreated.
  • The rose strengthens its roots so as not to freeze over the winter.

And if we help the "Queen of the Garden" do all this, then synchronized efforts will lead to a successful wintering. And in the spring, the rose will immediately set a course for growth and flowering, and not for repairing damage.

Pay attention to the fact that UNDER the rose

August with its onset of cold weather and increasingly annoying rains is a reason to pay attention to the soil of the rose garden:

Just be careful! Do not touch the roots

  • Comrade! Be sure to weed out all the weeds - in combination with high humidity and night frosts, they turned into an ideal breeding ground for fungi.
  • They ripped open the ground so that air would normally flow to the roots and they would not rot due to stagnant moisture. Especially if the rains have already begun. In addition, in the upper layers of the soil, many cunning insects can leave their offspring. There should be only loose earth around the rose!
  • If it so happened that the roots and (or) the root collar of the rose began to protrude above the ground, add sleep to the desired level. All the same, before winter, you will definitely have to take on this work.

This may seem like little things. But in practice, plant losses often occur precisely because one small detail, combined with another, leads to tears and the uprooting of a favorite variety.

Fungus protection: do it for half an hour

It was not without reason that I mentioned that August is already wet and cold. Especially towards the end and especially at night. And it is at this moment that roses naturally begin to hurt with spots, powdery mildew and other unpleasant diseases.

Powdery mildew on the rose: enough. This. endure, citizens!
Powdery mildew on the rose: enough. This. endure, citizens!

Many gardeners act very recklessly, refusing to fight, because "Anyway, the rose will soon throw off its leaves, and during the winter all the fungus will freeze." After all, the disease weakens the plant now.

As always, I prefer to be proactive, and I process the entire rose garden with Topaz once in August and once in early September. Yes, it's chemistry. But we don't have roses, right? And there won't be any powdery roses.

Top dressing: will help the roots and stems to ripen

Ripe roots and shoots survive frost well. Unripe - they freeze, begin to rot and torment the whole plant. To speed up the process and increase its "quality", potash fertilizer is applied under the roses in August.

Kalimagnesia is a good, but for reasons unclear to me, a little popular fertilizer

The easiest option is to take a mineral complex in the spirit of "Autumn". But, comrades, I like more potassium magnesium. Indeed, in addition to potassium, which is vital for roses in August, there is also magnesium, which is also useful for the autumn "Queen of the Garden" and, in general, this plant needs for health. In May, I even specially spray the entire rose garden with magnesium sulfate.

And now I am making a solution of potassium magnesium: 20-30 g per 10 liters of water. I pour half a bucket under each bush. It does not dissolve very well, so you can sprinkle the nakraynyak under the rose and spill the earth on top.
