How to quickly shorten a bolt, stud, screw without damaging the thread. Locksmith method (without grinder)
Sometimes problematic situations arise when the necessary tools are not at hand. A Russian person will always find a way out and solve any difficult problem.
A locksmith I know shared advice on how to shorten long bolts, studs, or other threaded elements without a grinder.
Even if there is a grinder, it is not recommended to use it in solving this problem. The fact is that it will be impossible to put a nut on the cut fasteners. When cutting with a grinder, the thread is wrinkled.
How can you shorten a threaded fastener while maintaining the thread?
To work, you need the following:
- The screw, stud or bolt to be shortened
- 2 nuts,
- Hacksaw for metal,
- Screwdriver.
Mark the place of the cut on the thread with a felt-tip pen.
We fasten one nut first. She will act as a limiter. Then we screw in the second one to fix the first one and prevent it from moving.
The prepared screw must be inserted into the screwdriver and fixed. Where the mark is with a marker, a hacksaw is applied for metal.
A screwdriver is turned on, a hairpin, a screw or other fasteners are set in motion (spindle rotation).
As a result, the metal sheet will easily cut off the unnecessary part of the long fasteners. This method is convenient to use, since the thread is not broken. The saw cut is even, without chipping. You don't need to trim anything.
