Homemade impregnation that turns wood into "plastic": the most effective composition against decay

Acetone and epoxy glue: the old-fashioned way

The method is far from new. Epoxy-based impregnation has been used since the 60s of the last century. It is used for processing any wood and wood materials: plywood, OSB, chipboard, etc. These compounds protect boats, skis, handles of knives and guns, any wood in critical areas - where it comes into contact with water, wet soil, and in general, it is in extremely unfavorable conditions. The impregnation very effectively protects the wood from rotting and delamination / decomposition due to regular wetting. And also this impregnation enhances the aesthetic component of wood - emphasizes the texture and pattern, saturates the colors.

How to prepare a protective impregnation at home?

The recipe is very simple. You need to mix one part of epoxy glue and three parts of acetone. The algorithm of actions is as follows:

• pour epoxy resin into a glass or metal container;
• add the hardener and mix until the components are completely mixed;
• immediately, without waiting, add acetone and stir until smooth;
• further use - apply with a brush to the prepared wood;
• apply 2-3 layers, new layers are applied after the previous ones have dried.

How it works?

When in contact with a hardener, epoxy forms the strongest polymer that has high adhesion, strength and moisture resistance. But the resin itself is thick and in order for it to penetrate into the wood, it is dissolved with acetone. Acetone quickly and deeply penetrates the structure of the tree and draws in the epoxy adhesive with it. Further, acetone evaporates, and epoxy glue polymerizes in the structure of the wood, giving it the properties of plastic.

This composition perfectly protects wood and wood materials from moisture, decay, natural decomposition, wood-boring insects. And also epoxy resin, solidified in the structure of the material, increases its strength and wear resistance.
