They sell this old hand tool for 15,000 rubles, but I won't sell mine.
This instrument is more than 100 years old and I got it from a relative, and he, together with the old house, built in 1904.
We are talking about a brace - a hand tool for drilling holes in wood.
It would seem an old hand tool, who needs it now, because now the holes are drilled with an electric drill, a screwdriver or a drilling machine. And here you need to drill with pens.
It turns out that the tool is needed, moreover, some copies of old bracelets are sold for 15,000 rubles.
Of course, at this price, they will buy more for the collection.
In the past, center drills were usually used with such bends, which made it possible to obtain fairly clean holes. Their shank was in the form of a cone, and the working part looked like this drill. Only in the center there is just a sharpened point, along the edge there is a trimming that forms the size of the hole, and on the other side there is a sharpened plane for removing material. There were no spirals on the center drills.
My brace has survived quite well: what should rotate - rotates. The only thing missing was the clamping screw, but a replacement was found.
I use this brace with old Soviet drills with a Morse taper shank.
About a month ago, this brace helped me a lot when drilling log walls. On the Lewis long drill, I ground off the shank a little so that it can be clamped in the brace.
I also decided to supplement this tool with a modern drill chuck, and thus expand the possibilities of its use.
Despite the fact that I have an electric drill, a screwdriver, a drilling machine, all situations arise when I use a brace. For example, there is only a conical drill of the required diameter or length, and it fits well into the brace. Or as in the case of drilling a log.
