Homemade turning tools from old tools: drills, reamers and taps
These tools were not chosen by chance. all of them are made of the so-called high-speed cutter - high-speed steel. Metal-cutting tools are made from this steel, but they are also very good when processing wood. The tempering temperature of such steel starts from 500 ° C.
I made my first turning tools from old files and they show themselves well when working, but after I came across a bar from a quick cutter, from which a semicircular cutter was made, I decided to make other cutters also from quick cut.
According to my observations, such incisors keep sharpening longer and, accordingly, with their help, you can get a cleaner surface.
Of the available blanks for the manufacture of cutters, old drills turned out to be, and it turned out to be inexpensive to buy old reamers and taps on the market. These tools are made from steels P6M5, P9, P18.
A semicircular roughing cutter and a small flat oblique cutter were made from the reamers.
I gave the shape to the incisors with the help of a grinder. Since steels P6M5, P9, P18 have tempering temperatures of 620-630 ° C and they need to be kept at this temperature for 4 hours, I was not particularly afraid of overheating.
Then he sharpened on a sharpener, cutters and finished by hand.
From the drill, I managed to make only a narrow oblique cutter. I can't imagine how to make something else out of a drill without a smithy.
I put a suitable tube on the rest of the drill to make it easier to work.
To tell the truth, working with this chisel is still difficult for me, you need to develop a skill here.
Cutters from taps turned out to be the fastest. They already had a semicircular notch and it was enough to cut off the excess from the bottom of the cutter and sharpen it.
The sharpening angle of these cutters was made approximately 45 ° relative to the cutter axis.
In the photo above, you can see how these incisors are sharpened. The sharpening was done so that it was possible to work with the side of the cutter.
Below you can watch a short video clip on the manufacture and testing of these cutters.
I began to master the turning business not so long ago, and the manufacture of cutters, their sharpening, turning of various crafts with their help is a good experience for gaining skills.
