How ordinary nails save the forest from illegal logging: the way of "green" activists
In one city of the former USSR, the administration gave a piece of forest for building. Locals called it a park, but that's not the point. People here walked, breathed air, fed squirrels; at one end of the forest there was an equipped area for training dogs. And with the advent of capitalism, this whole idyll was to be destroyed - the only oasis of the forest was planned to be turned into a faceless human man. But the felling did not work out! Thorns of trees - salvation through pain
The way that saved the forest is called tree spiking. This technique involves driving hefty nails into the tree trunk. Nails with a length of 100 to 200 mm are driven into the trunk at an angle of 60 ° at a height of 5 to 200 cm from the ground. The hats of the hardware are cut off. The number of nails for one tree is from 20 to 100 pieces.
The meaning of this operation is that a hand saw blade, an automatic saw blade or a chainsaw chain "flies" to the "devil's mother", bumping into a steel surprise located under the bark of a tree. And even if the spiked wood can be knocked down by dozens of torn chains, then it does not go for further processing, since sawmills also do not "digest" huge steel nails.
The tree also suffers from this procedure, but only slightly. This can be called a wood piercing, the attributes of which, although painful, save lives. The main thing in this procedure is that the nail does not go into the core. Therefore, they need to be driven in at an angle of 60 °.
This method was invented by a cunning American lumberjack. In the late 19th century, two competing logging companies fought in the United States. And in order to spoil the life of one, the workers of the other hammered steel surprises into the trunks of trees on a controversial plot. The competitors, having broken off the saw teeth, retreated. Later, in the 30s of the XX century, this method was described in his book "Eco-protection" by the organizer of the society for radical environmental protection Dave Foreman. Now it is used by forest defenders all over the world. But in some countries, this method is recognized as environmental terrorism.
If you want to save the forest, draw the letter “W” on the trees
It is not necessary to spike hundreds of trunks to save a forest or park. It is enough to spike a dozen trees, and draw or post a notice on the rest that the trees are spiked. This is more of a psychological weapon - black lumberjacks are afraid to get involved with such trees, since a broken chain is one thing, and the possible injury inflicted on it is another.
But now some lumberjacks are very advanced and go about their dirty business with metal detectors. So for the sake of saving the tree, 3-5 nails will have to be driven into it!
