What is forbidden to put in compost: a list of hazardous ingredients that we used to put in a compost pit
Compost is a valuable fertilizer, but it's not worth making it anyhow. It must be understood that compost is a balanced system, not a cesspool. When adding some components, it can produce the opposite effect and the garden, as they say, "will be covered with a copper basin." To prevent this from happening, read the list of "ingredients" that absolutely must not be put into the compost pit. Dispelling a persistent myth
Before listing the components undesirable for compost, let's remember one persistent "taboo" about citrus peels. According to many "experts", they should not be composted. They supposedly contain essential oils that harm worms and generally make compost bad. This statement can be called nonsense. And this is, to put it mildly!
Perhaps if you do compost only from citrus peels, it will turn out to be useless. But if you add a couple of kilograms of orange or grapefruit peels, then it will not do any harm. On the contrary, citrus peels are very quickly colonized by penicillin fungi, and these penicillin fungi protect plants from various infections and diseases.
Prohibited for composting
Let's start with the most common composting mistakes.
- “Drywall is chalk and paper! Absolutely healthy and environmentally friendly! " - some summer residents assure. No matter how it is! This material contains toxins. It is strictly forbidden to put it in a compost pit.
- Do not dispose of the contents of litter boxes or dog faeces in the compost. Many people think that animal waste is an excellent compost material, containing mineralized and non-mineralized plant nutrients. It is, but if you are completely sure that your pets are absolutely healthy. The key word in this sentence is “absolutely”. If they are carriers of any infections, then the compost will become a breeding ground for these diseases.
- Also banned are bones, pieces of meat and leftovers from fatty foods. Small pieces of meat will not harm the compost, they are even eaten by worms. But bones and large pieces will certainly attract rats and other "evil spirits", which can also be a carrier of some vigorous and very dangerous infection (up to plague).
- Do not throw away food leftovers along with non-degradable packaging - this will lead to the formation of microplastics. At first glance, cardboard packaging may contain polymers that will not bring anything good to the soil. And even, on the contrary, this plastic can harm worms. The same applies to glossy paper packaging, colored newspapers and magazines. By the way, there is no lead in black ink for a long time, but heavy metals can be contained in non-ferrous ink.
