Radiant wants to replace diesel generators with miniature nuclear reactors
Radiant company (California, USA), which brings together specialists who previously worked in such a notorious companies like SpaceX have announced the start of work on a miniature nuclear reactor with an installed capacity of just 1 MW.
As envisioned by the engineers, their reactor plant will easily fit into a shipping container and will be able to provide energy to about 1,000 households.
Another microreactor from an American startup
The main idea of the engineers is that for greater efficiency, energy sources should be located as close to the consumer as possible. For these purposes, scientists decided to create a microreactor that can easily fit into, for example, a sea container, which will allow it to be easily transported and located in any remote objects (scientific stations, military bases, etc.).
So, as conceived by the engineers, microreactors will be as mobile as possible, and their distinctive feature structure will consist in the fact that instead of water cooling of the core will be used helium.
So, according to representatives of Radiant, their installation will be able to withstand significant loads, the fuel used will be more stable and will withstand significantly higher temperature compared to classical nuclear reactors, and the use of a helium cooler will increase reliability and durability products.
Scientists also say that all the necessary patents and permits for the main elements of the installation have already been obtained, and about $ 1.2 million have been attracted from private investors.
The company representatives are convinced that their mini-reactors will be in demand primarily among the military, and reactors will be used as power sources for remote bases instead of uneconomical diesel generators.
Well, let's see what will come of it in the end, and I ask you to write your opinion in the comments.
